# project-health

Audits Claude configuration in a repo: permissions, context files, leaked secrets. Works on a fresh project and on one that has grown messy.

## What it does

The skill inspects what has piled up in your project settings and cleans it out. A full check runs two tracks at once: permissions and context files. The report shows which MCP servers are connected but missing from `settings.local.json`, which entries went stale, whether any line looks like an API key or token, and whether `CLAUDE.md` has grown too large.

Heavy analysis runs in sub-agents, and the main conversation only collects their summaries. Scanning dozens of files therefore does not fill up your context. The permission agent reads `settings.local.json`, catches legacy syntax such as `Bash(git:*)` instead of `Bash(git *)`, junk fragments like `Bash(do)`, and duplicates already covered by a broader pattern. The context agent counts lines in each `CLAUDE.md`, scores quality, looks for dead path references and checks that expected docs exist.

There is a separate mode for a new project: the type is detected from files in the root (`pyproject.toml`, `Cargo.toml`, `wrangler.jsonc` and others), then a matching permission preset is picked. Fixes are applied after a single yes/no confirmation. The skill is marked `claude-code-only`, so do not count on it in other agents.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill project-health -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/project-health/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/project-health/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill project-health -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/project-health/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill project-health -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/project-health/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills project-health
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/project-health/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill project-health -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills --path plugins/dev-tools/skills/project-health
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/project-health/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill project-health -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dev-tools/skills/project-health/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check permissions in `settings.local.json` and drop junk entries
- spot strings that look like leaked keys or tokens
- score the size and quality of `CLAUDE.md` files
- pick a permission preset that matches the project type
- save session findings into context files

## Example prompts
- project health — run a full check on this repo
- setup project — configure a new project from scratch
- capture learnings — save what we figured out this session

# Project Health

One skill for everything about your project's Claude Code configuration. Run it at the start, middle, or end of a project — it figures out what's needed.

**Goal**: Zero permission prompts, well-organised context files, no cruft.

## When to Use

| You say... | What happens |
|-----------|-------------|
| "project health" / "check project" | Full audit: permissions + context + docs |
| "setup project" / "kickoff" / "bootstrap" | New project setup from scratch |
| "tidy permissions" / "clean settings" | Fix permissions file only |
| "capture learnings" / "update CLAUDE.md" | Save session discoveries |
| "add python" / "add docker permissions" | Add a preset to existing settings |
| "audit context" / "audit memory" | Context-focused audit only |

## Architecture: Sub-Agents

**Heavy analysis runs in sub-agents** to keep the main conversation clean. The main agent orchestrates; sub-agents do the scanning and return summaries.

### Agent 1: Permission Auditor

Launched with `Task(subagent_type: "general-purpose")`. Prompt:

```
Read .claude/settings.local.json.
**Discover connected MCP servers**: Use ToolSearch (search "mcp") and extract unique
server prefixes from tool names (e.g. mcp__vault__secret_list → vault).
**Discover installed skills**: Use the Skill tool or ToolSearch to list available skills.
For each skill that has scripts/ in its directory, note what Bash patterns it needs
(python3, env var prefixes like GEMINI_API_KEY=*, etc.). Check the SKILL.md for any
MCP tools the skill references (e.g. mcp__vault__secret_get).
Report:
1. MCP servers connected but NOT in settings (missing)
2. MCP servers in settings but NOT connected (stale)
3. Skill permissions: Bash patterns and MCP tools that installed skills need but aren't approved
4. File access: check for Read/Edit/Write patterns for .claude/** and //tmp/**
