## What it does

The skill runs a stack review in four steps: audit software spend and look for all-in-one platforms, define the core data and communication layers, sort tools into safe bets and early-adopter picks, and find admin work that agentic tools can take over. The material comes from episodes and posts on Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

Analytics is one of the anchors. Without a dedicated engineering resource on instrumentation, the data stays garbage, and product-led growth never gets off the ground. The other point: a small team is advised to buy a third-party experimentation tool rather than build one, since a homegrown platform needs statistical expertise on top of engineering time. Worth checking against your actual team size.

The skill also flags common mistakes: heavy backlogs and story points too early, no granular tracking, and product usage data that never reaches the CRM. All 25 sourced insights from 6 guests live in `references/guest-insights.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-tool-stack -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/product-tool-stack/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/product-tool-stack/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-tool-stack -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/product-tool-stack/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-tool-stack -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/product-tool-stack/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills product-tool-stack
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/product-tool-stack/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-tool-stack -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/product-tool-stack
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/product-tool-stack/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-tool-stack -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/product-tool-stack/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- audit software spend and drop redundant point solutions
- decide where a safe bet is enough and where an early tool pays off
- set up product event tracking with engineering behind it
- choose between buying an experimentation platform and building one
- sync product usage data into CRM and marketing tools

## Example prompts
- review our product stack and show me where data moves by hand
- help me choose between an all-in-one platform and separate point tools
- what admin work should we hand to AI agents

# Product Stack Strategy

Build a high-performance product toolkit by balancing established standards with AI-native speed.

Help the user with product stack strategy using insights from 6 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Audit and Consolidate** - Review current software spending and identifying opportunities to move toward all-in-one platforms that reduce workflow friction.
2. **Define the Foundation** - Establish the core data and communication layers required for early-stage stability and cross-functional alignment.
3. **Apply Selection Frameworks** - Distinguish between 'safe bet' industry standards for stability and 'early-adopter' tools for competitive productivity gains.
4. **Integrate AI-Native Workflows** - Identify specific opportunities to automate administrative tasks, ticket drafting, and video editing with agentic tools.

## Core Principles

### Consolidate for seamless workflows
From "A year free of PostHog ($16,500 value): The all-in-one analytics, experimentation, feature flag, surveys, session replay, error tracking, data warehouse, LLM analytics platform": "Being able to follow an issue from a session recording, to its impact in analytics, to shipping a fix as a feature flag, to testing a variant, to collecting feedback with surveys—that’s the holy grail."

Moving toward all-in-one platforms reduces the technical and operational friction of managing multiple point solutions, enabling better integration between discovery and shipping.

### Commit to engineering-backed data
From "Five steps to starting your product-led growth motion, part 2": "Tools such as Amplitude and Mixpanel are commonly used here, but, as the saying goes, “garbage in, garbage out.” Companies need to dedicate engineering resources to instrument tracking properly. Many B2B companies are significantly lacking in product analytics—watching product usage closely is less important when you sell via human touch—but without a strong foundation of product analytics, PLG will never work."

Product analytics requires dedicated engineering resources for proper instrumentation; successful PLG is impossible without a robust data foundation.

### Buy instead of build experimentation
