Turns product reviews from status updates into structured deep-dives: problem framing, option mapping and decisions people actually agree on.

## What it does

The skill draws on 12 episodes and posts from Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter. It walks through four steps: assess your current review culture and find the bottlenecks, pick a format that fits the project's complexity and stage, draft the materials (problem statement, option space, pre-read document), then facilitate the session — reading the room, handling dissent and capturing decisions.

It ships with named frameworks: Miro's P-Strat, P0, P1, P2 stages, the uncertainty × impact 2x2 for reviewing delegated work, Figma's option space, Snowflake's six-pager, Notion's four-stage process, an async workflow built on talktracks and the Project Murder Board. The full list sits in `references/artifacts.md`; the 12 sourced insights are in `references/guest-insights.md`.

The skill also flags the usual failure modes: reviews that turn into status updates, reviews held so late the team is already wedded to a solution, chasing consensus instead of alignment, and debating solutions before anyone agreed on the problem. Installation runs through `npx skills add`, so you need Node.js and GitHub access.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-reviews -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/product-reviews/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/product-reviews/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-reviews -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/product-reviews/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-reviews -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/product-reviews/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills product-reviews
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/product-reviews/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-reviews -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/product-reviews
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/product-reviews/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill product-reviews -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- move a recurring review from status updates to strategy
- frame the problem so leadership agrees before solutions are debated
- pick the right review stage for a project's complexity
- prepare a pre-read document and an option space
- surface dissent in the room and capture a clear decision

## Example prompts
- Help me plan a product review for a new project — which format should we use?
- Draft a pre-read for our project: problem, options, key data
- Run a review with me: the team is arguing about solutions but never agreed on the problem

# Effective Product Reviews

Run rigorous alignment sessions that raise the quality bar and accelerate decision-making.

Help the user with effective product reviews using insights from 12 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Assess review culture** - Evaluate current review formats and identify bottlenecks or gaps in quality standards.
2. **Select a framework** - Recommend the appropriate review stage or template based on the project's complexity and lifecycle.
3. **Draft review materials** - Assist in framing problem statements, mapping the option space, and preparing pre-read documents.
4. **Facilitate the session** - Provide techniques for gauging sentiment, managing dissent, and capturing clear decisions.

## Core Principles

### Evaluate Frameworks, Not Solutions
From "How Figma builds product": "One thing I encourage for both is to first present the “option space”—it’s really powerful to have a framework that maps all possible solutions or problems and use that as a device to discuss high-level tradeoffs or philosophical differences."

High-quality decisions come from mapping the entire field of possible solutions rather than debating a single proposal in isolation.

### Establish a Transparent Cadence
From "How Duolingo builds product": "Product review meetings happen every Tuesday and Thursday for a total of two hours. These two hours are divided into 20-minute slots that product teams sign up to present. The agenda of these meetings is product teams presenting their proposed product changes for the first 5 to 10 minutes and then reviewers asking questions and giving feedback for the rest of the time."

Recurring, short review slots prevent feedback bottlenecks and create a shared understanding of what constitutes quality across the organization.

### Separate Problem from Solution
From "How Miro builds product": "Product reviews can focus on different stages of the product development lifecycle: P-Strat: long-term strategy and vision; P0: the opportunity and problem that we want to pursue; P1: the proposed solution; P2: what we launched and how it’s performing."

Structure reviews into distinct stages to ensure leadership agrees on the problem and the strategic direction before teams commit to high-fidelity design work.
