## What it does

The skill follows a mapping method: capture the current state (AS-IS) first, then design the future state (TO-BE). Four reference guides ship with it in the `references/` directory — process documentation, current state analysis, future state design and improvement metrics. A table of approaches covers value stream mapping and swimlane diagrams with roles and responsibilities.

You answer the agent's questions about how the work happens today, who touches it and where it stalls. It turns those answers into a diagram with decision points and exceptions. One rule is stated plainly: document the real process, not the one the handbook describes. Otherwise the map is decoration.

The skill isn't tied to a language or stack, so it works for non-code business processes too. Install is one command, and the skill file lands at `~/.claude/skills/process-mapping/SKILL.md`. Maps go stale — if the process changes often, you update them by hand, since nothing syncs them automatically.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill process-mapping -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/process-mapping/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/process-mapping/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill process-mapping -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/process-mapping/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill process-mapping -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/process-mapping/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts process-mapping
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/process-mapping/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill process-mapping -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/process-mapping
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/process-mapping/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill process-mapping -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts/tree/HEAD/skills/process-mapping/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- document a workflow so a new teammate can follow it
- spot bottlenecks and redundant approvals in a process
- design an improved process together with the people doing the work
- split a workflow by role and area of responsibility
- prepare material before rolling out a new system

## Example prompts
- map our current client onboarding process and flag where it stalls
- draw a swimlane diagram for the contract approval workflow
- design the future ticket handling process and compare it to the current one

## Overview

Process mapping creates visual representations of workflows, helping teams understand current operations, identify bottlenecks, and design improvements.

## When to Use

- Documenting existing workflows
- Identifying process improvements
- Onboarding new team members
- Discovering inefficiencies and bottlenecks
- Planning system implementations
- Analyzing customer journeys
- Automating manual processes
- Training and documentation

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```yaml
Mapping Approaches:
Current State (AS-IS):
  Purpose: Understand existing process
  Participants: People doing the work
  Timeline: 2-4 hours
  Output: Current workflow diagram
  Benefits: Identifies real bottlenecks
Future State (TO-BE):
  Purpose: Design improved process
  Participants: Cross-functional team
  Timeline: 4-8 hours
  Output: Improved workflow design
  Benefits: Clear vision for change
Value Stream Mapping:
  Purpose: Focus on value-added vs waste
  Participants: Process owners, operations
  Timeline: Full day
  Output: Detailed flow with timing
  Benefits: Identifies waste and delays
Swimlane Diagram:
  Purpose: Show roles and responsibilities
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Reference Guides

Detailed implementations in the `references/` directory:

| Guide | Contents |
|---|---|
| [Process Documentation](references/process-documentation.md) | Process Documentation |
| [Current State Analysis](references/current-state-analysis.md) | Current State Analysis |
| [Future State Design](references/future-state-design.md) | Future State Design |
| [Process Improvement Metrics](references/process-improvement-metrics.md) | Process Improvement Metrics |

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Map current state first before designing changes
- Include all stakeholders in mapping sessions
- Document actual processes, not theoretical ones
- Identify waste and bottlenecks
- Design future state with team input
- Include decision points and exceptions
- Add timing and resource information
- Keep processes simple and visual
- Update maps when processes change
- Use mapping to drive continuous improvement

### ❌ DON'T

- Skip documenting current state
- Design future state without understanding current
