## What it does

The skill gives the agent a working set of privacy practices. It covers data classification, minimization, lawful basis, consent management, data subject access requests (access, deletion, portability), data processing agreements, DPIA and TIA, and breach notification timing. It also handles the technical side of the right to be forgotten across backups, caches, analytics and third parties.

Inside are regulation tables mapped to articles and engineering hooks, a minimal classification from Public to Regulated, a list of common minimization findings, and grep patterns for spotting personal data in DB schemas and logs. The agent works through `Read`, `Grep`, `Glob`, `Bash`, `Write` and `WebSearch`.

This is the engineering layer, not the legal one: final compliance calls stay with counsel. If your project holds personal data but no data store has a documented classification, that is worth a look — systems often start as "internal" and quietly turn "personal" once someone adds an email column.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills --skill privacy-engineering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/privacy-engineering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/privacy-engineering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills --skill privacy-engineering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/privacy-engineering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills --skill privacy-engineering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/privacy-engineering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills privacy-engineering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/privacy-engineering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills --skill privacy-engineering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills --path skills/privacy-engineering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/privacy-engineering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills --skill privacy-engineering -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/briiirussell/cybersecurity-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/privacy-engineering/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- classify data stores and surface undocumented personal data
- strip unnecessary fields from logs and analytics
- document a lawful basis for each processing activity
- answer a data subject access request: access, deletion, portability
- run a DPIA or TIA before shipping a feature

## Example prompts
- audit our service for GDPR: what personal data do we collect and where does it live
- help me implement user deletion on request — including backups, caches and analytics
- draft a DPIA for a new feature that uses location data

# Privacy Engineering — GDPR / CCPA Technical Implementation

Implement privacy controls at the code, data, and infrastructure layers. This skill is not legal compliance theater — it is the engineering work that turns the legal requirements into systems that actually do what they claim.

Privacy and security overlap but are not the same. Security protects against unauthorized access; privacy protects against authorized-but-improper use. A perfectly secure system that logs every keystroke and shares the log with vendors is a privacy disaster. This skill covers the privacy half of that distinction.

Cross-references: `owasp-audit` for the security side, `iam-audit` for access control to personal data, `secrets-audit` for credential handling, `incident-triage` for the response side of a privacy breach (72-hour GDPR notification clock starts when you find out, not when you finish investigating), `security-comms` for the customer-disclosure draft.

## Regulatory landscape (engineering-relevant subset)

The skill produces compliant technical implementations. Final compliance determinations stay with counsel; this skill is the technical execution layer.

| Regulation | Scope | Key engineering hooks |
|---|---|---|
| **GDPR** (EU) | Any processing of personal data of EU/EEA residents | Articles 5 (principles), 6 (lawful basis), 7 (consent), 15-22 (data subject rights), 25 (privacy by design), 30 (records of processing), 32 (security), 33 (breach notification — 72 hours), 35 (DPIA) |
```
