## What it does

This skill guides Prisma schema modifications without risking data loss. It classifies migrations into distinct categories: additive changes, column renames, data transformations, and risky type conversions. For every pattern, the assistant lays out concrete SQL steps to preserve integrity during deployment.

Execution follows an explicit sequence. You generate a draft migration file using `--create-only`, inspect the raw SQL, and append necessary data update statements. When dealing with populated tables, the guide suggests batching updates via `PrismaClient` scripts instead of single giant transactions. This protects database throughput.

Rollback guidance outlines SQL scripts to drop or restore columns, while highlighting potential data loss when rolling back backfilled fields. Automated checks run via `npx prisma migrate deploy` in Jest or Vitest suites against a dedicated test database. Without defining `TEST_DATABASE_URL`, local migration test suites will fail.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill prisma-migration-assistant -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/prisma-migration-assistant/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/prisma-migration-assistant/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill prisma-migration-assistant -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/prisma-migration-assistant/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill prisma-migration-assistant -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/prisma-migration-assistant/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills prisma-migration-assistant
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/prisma-migration-assistant/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill prisma-migration-assistant -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path db-management/prisma-migration-assistant
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/prisma-migration-assistant/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill prisma-migration-assistant -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- plan Prisma schema changes with SQL previews
- split existing table columns without dropping data
- convert database field types through temporary staging columns
- write batched TypeScript scripts to backfill missing record values
- generate rollback SQL scripts for schema deployments

## Example prompts
- Help me split the `name` column into `firstName` and `lastName` in `schema.prisma` and prepare the data migration SQL.
- Create a safe migration sequence to change the `price` field from `Float` to `Decimal`.
- Write a TypeScript backfill script using `PrismaClient` to populate default user roles in batches.

# Prisma Migration Assistant

Plan and execute safe Prisma migrations with confidence.

## Migration Planning Workflow

```typescript
// 1. Update schema.prisma
model User {
  id        Int      @id @default(autoincrement())
  email     String   @unique
  // NEW: Split name into firstName and lastName
  firstName String?
  lastName  String?
  // OLD: name      String  // Will remove this
  createdAt DateTime @default(now())
}
// 2. Create migration
// npx prisma migrate dev --name split_user_name --create-only
// 3. Review generated SQL
// 4. Add data migration
// 5. Test migration
// 6. Apply to production
```

## Migration Types

### 1. Additive Migration (Safe)

```prisma
// Adding new optional field - safe!
model Product {
  id          Int     @id @default(autoincrement())
  name        String
  description String?
  price       Float
  newField    String? // NEW - optional, no backfill needed
}
```

```bash
# Generate migration
npx prisma migrate dev --name add_product_new_field
# SQL generated:
# ALTER TABLE "Product" ADD COLUMN "newField" TEXT;
```

### 2. Column Rename (Needs Data Copy)

```prisma
model User {
  id         Int    @id @default(autoincrement())
  emailAddr  String @unique // Renamed from 'email'
}
```

```sql
-- migrations/20240115_rename_email/migration.sql
-- Step 1: Add new column
ALTER TABLE "User" ADD COLUMN "emailAddr" TEXT;
-- Step 2: Copy data
UPDATE "User" SET "emailAddr" = "email";
-- Step 3: Make new column required
ALTER TABLE "User" ALTER COLUMN "emailAddr" SET NOT NULL;
-- Step 4: Add unique constraint
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX "User_emailAddr_key" ON "User"("emailAddr");
-- Step 5: Drop old column
ALTER TABLE "User" DROP COLUMN "email";
```

### 3. Data Transformation (Complex)

```prisma
// Before: Single name field
// After: First and last name
model User {
  id        Int     @id @default(autoincrement())
  firstName String
  lastName  String
  // name   String  // Removed
}
```

```sql
-- migrations/20240115_split_name/migration.sql
-- Step 1: Add new columns
ALTER TABLE "User" ADD COLUMN "firstName" TEXT;
````
