# printing-press-import

Pulls a published CLI from the public library into your internal copy, module path reverted and manuscripts alongside. Useful when the CLI isn't on your machine.

## What it does

The skill fetches a CLI from the public library `mvanhorn/printing-press-library` and drops it into the internal library at `$PRESS_LIBRARY/`, matching the shape the generator would produce. Manuscripts come along. Once imported, the CLI is ready for `/printing-press-polish` or `/printing-press-emboss`, and the publish step re-applies the module path rewrites.

The argument can be loose: an API slug (`notion`), a brand name (`cal.com`), an old CLI name, or something close. Resolution runs against the public library's `registry.json` — exact name match first, then a normalized one (drop the `-pp-cli` suffix, lowercase, dot to hyphen), then a substring hit on name or description. Multiple matches get narrowed to at most four candidates for you to pick from.

You need the Go toolchain at 1.26.10 or newer, because the build and validation steps won't run without it. The skill also checks free space on the `$PRESS_HOME` volume and warns when it's low: repository clones and the Go build cache can eat several GiB. If an internal copy already exists, it compares provenance on both sides before overwriting anything.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/cli-printing-press --skill printing-press-import -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/printing-press-import/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/printing-press-import/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/cli-printing-press --skill printing-press-import -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/printing-press-import/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/cli-printing-press --skill printing-press-import -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/printing-press-import/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mvanhorn/cli-printing-press printing-press-import
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/printing-press-import/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/cli-printing-press --skill printing-press-import -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mvanhorn/cli-printing-press --path skills/printing-press-import
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/printing-press-import/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/cli-printing-press --skill printing-press-import -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- fetch a CLI the public library has but your machine doesn't
- recover a broken or lost internal copy
- get a clean baseline before polishing a published CLI
- sync an internal copy with the public version
- bring manuscripts over together with the CLI code

## Example prompts
- Import the notion CLI from the public library
- Bring cal.com into my library
- I don't have allrecipes locally yet — fetch it from the public library

# /printing-press-import

Bring a published CLI from the public library
([`mvanhorn/printing-press-library`](https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library))
into the internal library at `$PRESS_LIBRARY/` so it matches
the form the generator would produce. Manuscripts ride along.

```bash
/printing-press-import notion
/printing-press-import cal.com
/printing-press-import allrecipes --from-clone ~/Code/printing-press-library
```

The internal library is the working copy; the public library is the
durable artifact. After import, the CLI is ready for polish, emboss, or
re-publish — the publish step will re-apply the module path rewrites.

## When to run

- The public library has a CLI you don't have locally
- The internal copy is broken, lost, or out of sync
- You want a clean baseline before running polish on a published CLI

If the user is asking to polish a CLI and mentions "in/from the public
library" or "from the repo", suggest running this skill first.

## Setup

```bash
PRESS_HOME="${PRINTING_PRESS_HOME:-$HOME/printing-press}"
PRESS_LIBRARY="$PRESS_HOME/library"
PRESS_MANUSCRIPTS="$PRESS_HOME/manuscripts"
SCRIPTS_DIR="$(dirname "${BASH_SOURCE[0]:-.}")/references"
if ! command -v go >/dev/null 2>&1; then
  echo ""
  echo "[setup-error] Go toolchain not found."
  echo ""
  echo "This Printing Press flow runs Go-based build or validation commands."
  echo "Install Go 1.26.10 or newer from https://go.dev/dl/, then verify with:"
  echo "  go version"
  echo "Then re-run this skill."
  echo ""
  return 1 2>/dev/null || exit 1
