Enforces strict type system rules: brand semantic primitives, parse external data at boundaries, and derive types directly from schemas.

## What it does

The skill instructs coding agents to reject invalid program states at compile time rather than adding ad-hoc defensive checks across the codebase. It requires distinct semantic primitives to use separate types, such as TypeScript branded intersections or newtypes. A `UserId` and an `OrderId` cannot be passed interchangeably even if both are strings.

External inputs like JSON payloads or database rows are treated as untyped until validated. You parse at the boundary into a validated model instead of casting. Parallel type declarations are eliminated: shapes must derive from source schemas like OpenAPI or GraphQL.

Because the skill sets `disable-model-invocation: true`, the model will not invoke it autonomously; you trigger it when designing types or reviewing code. For TypeScript-specific syntax, it points to the companion `typescript-best-practices` skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-type-system-discipline -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/principle-type-system-discipline/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/principle-type-system-discipline/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-type-system-discipline -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/principle-type-system-discipline/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-type-system-discipline -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/principle-type-system-discipline/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install backnotprop/pstack principle-type-system-discipline
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/principle-type-system-discipline/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-type-system-discipline -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/backnotprop/pstack --path skills/principle-type-system-discipline
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/principle-type-system-discipline/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-type-system-discipline -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- prevent passing interchangeable primitive IDs such as user and order strings
- parse raw inputs from JSON or environment variables at system boundaries
- generate types from OpenAPI or GraphQL schemas instead of writing them manually
- eliminate invalid states at compile time without scattering ad-hoc checks

## Example prompts
- Review function signatures in the checkout module using principle-type-system-discipline
- Design branded types for customer IDs and account IDs
- Create a boundary parser for incoming webhook JSON payloads

# Type System Discipline

Make the compiler reject impossible states, mismatched primitives, and unhandled variants. Prefer defining errors and special cases out of existence over proliferating handlers. For TypeScript syntax, see the `typescript-best-practices` skill.

- **Brand semantic primitives.** `UserId` and `OrderId` are strings underneath but should not be interchangeable. Give each its own type, such as a branded intersection in TypeScript or a newtype elsewhere. Validate once at creation, trust the type downstream. If two arguments share a primitive type but mean different things, brand them.
- **External data is untyped until parsed.** RPC payloads, JSON, IPC messages, CLI args, config files, environment variables, database rows. Have a parse function at every boundary that turns unstructured input into the typed model. The **boundary-discipline** principle skill says where to put validation.
- **Derive types from authoritative schemas.** When a protocol buffer, OpenAPI spec, GraphQL schema, database migration, design-token file, or another file owns a shape, derive from it instead of hand-rolling a parallel type. See the **encode-lessons-in-structure** principle skill.
