A debugging skill that walks each symptom back to the first place the system went wrong and insists the fix lands there.

## What it does

The skill kicks in while an agent is debugging. A symptom is where a wrong state became visible. The root cause is the first place the code did something it should not do, or failed to handle a state it should handle.

What's inside is a sequence of steps. Reproduce first. Then ask "why" at every step until the answer is a wrong decision in the code rather than a consequence of an earlier one. When stuck, instrument: read the actual error and the actual state instead of guessing. Then the key question — is the state that triggered the symptom legitimate? If the system may be in that state, the code that broke on it is the root cause, and handling the state there is the fix. If that state should never exist, a check at the break point hides the bug; find what produced it. Guards, retries, swallowed errors, clamped values and discarded state are the usual ways a bug gets hidden.

There are practical leads too. A failure that shows up only after a restart points at persisted state first: config files, caches, lock files, serialized state. Look for the pattern, not the single instance, and fix every place with the same fault. If a workaround needs a paragraph-long comment to justify it, the code is wrong, not the comment. The skill lives in the `backnotprop/pstack` repository under MIT and installs with one command per platform.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-fix-root-causes -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/principle-fix-root-causes/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/principle-fix-root-causes/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-fix-root-causes -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/principle-fix-root-causes/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-fix-root-causes -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/principle-fix-root-causes/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install backnotprop/pstack principle-fix-root-causes
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/principle-fix-root-causes/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-fix-root-causes -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/backnotprop/pstack --path skills/principle-fix-root-causes
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/principle-fix-root-causes/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add backnotprop/pstack --skill principle-fix-root-causes -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/backnotprop/pstack/tree/HEAD/skills/principle-fix-root-causes/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- trace a bug to the first place the system went wrong instead of patching the symptom
- tell a legitimate state apart from a bug it is hiding
- debug a failure that only appears after a restart
- find every place with the same fault and fix them together
- strip out guards and retries that mask the real cause

## Example prompts
- reproduce the bug and trace it to the root cause without touching where it surfaced
- is that state even legitimate? if it is, fix the code that broke on it
- it only fails after a restart — check persisted state: config files, caches, lock files

# Fix Root Causes

When debugging, fix the fault, not the place where it surfaced. The symptom is where a wrong state became visible. The root cause is the first place the system did something it should not do, or failed to handle a state it should handle.

**Why:** A symptom fix hides the evidence and leaves the fault free to surface somewhere else. Each one makes the system harder to reason about, because the code now carries a workaround for a bug that nobody named.

**Pattern:**
- Reproduce first.
- Ask "why" at each step until the answer is a wrong decision in the code, not a consequence of an earlier one.
- When stuck, instrument. Read the actual error and the actual state. Do not guess.
- Ask whether the state that triggered the symptom is legitimate. If the system may be in that state, the code that broke on it is the root cause, and handling the state there is the fix. If the state should never exist, a check where it broke hides the bug. Find what produced the state. Guards, retries, swallowed errors, clamped values, and discarded state are the usual ways to hide a bug.
- When something fails only after a restart, suspect persisted state first: config files, caches, lock files, serialized state.
- Check for the pattern, not just the instance. Find every place with the same fault and fix them all.
- If a workaround needs a paragraph-long comment to justify it, the code is wrong. Fix the code, not the comment.
- If the deciding fact took a deep dig to find, propose the cheap, always-on signal that would have shown it at first look.
