# pricing-optimizer

Works out true margin per product or service and points at the offerings you undercharge for. Useful when you cannot tell which line is dragging profit down.

## What it does

The skill lines up your current prices against actual costs and prints the economics of each offering: average sale price, unit cost, margin, volume, revenue. Anything under 40% margin gets flagged as a candidate for a price increase, and the target price for a margin you want comes from unit cost divided by one minus that margin. Offerings are ranked by total profit contribution rather than margin percentage, so a 30% margin on a $10,000 deal can outrank a 60% margin on a $500 one.

Two Wilson tools do the heavy lifting: `spending_summary` builds the cost basis from COGS and direct costs per category, `transaction_search` pulls revenue by product line along with volumes and average transaction size. The skill asks for the analysis period and your list of offerings, or detects them from transaction categories. Without Wilson it falls back to a spreadsheet: columns for product, price charged, direct cost and units sold, plus formulas for unit margin, total profit and target price.

The revenue impact estimate assumes you lose somewhere between 0 and 10% of volume for every 10% price increase. Treat that as a starting assumption, not a forecast — niche services often hold their clients at higher prices, commodity products usually do not. The skill's own advice is to test increases on new clients before touching existing rates.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill pricing-optimizer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pricing-optimizer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pricing-optimizer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill pricing-optimizer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pricing-optimizer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill pricing-optimizer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pricing-optimizer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install openaccountant/skills pricing-optimizer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pricing-optimizer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

## When to use it
- calculate real margin per service instead of a single revenue figure
- spot offerings that sell well but barely contribute profit
- derive a target price for a margin you choose
- estimate what a price increase does to revenue
- compare your effective hourly rate against market rates

## Example prompts
- analyze my pricing and costs for last quarter, show margin per service
- which offerings am I underpricing? work out target price at 50% margin
- what happens to revenue if I raise design package prices by 15%?

# Pricing Optimizer

## Overview
Compare your current pricing against actual costs to calculate true margins per product or service. Identifies underpriced offerings, estimates the revenue impact of price adjustments, and suggests target pricing based on desired margin.

## Wilson Tools Used
- `spending_summary` — calculate COGS and direct costs per category to determine cost basis
- `transaction_search` — pull revenue by product or service line, identify transaction volumes and average transaction size

## Workflow
1. Ask for the analysis period and list of products/services offered (or detect from transaction categories).
2. Use `transaction_search` to find all revenue transactions, grouped by product/service type.
3. Calculate: average sale price, total units sold, total revenue per offering.
4. Use `spending_summary` to identify direct costs associated with each product/service.
5. Calculate per-offering economics:

```
PRICING ANALYSIS — [Period]
════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Product/Service    Avg Price   Unit Cost   Margin   Volume   Revenue
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Web Design Pkg      $3,000      $1,200      60%       8     $24,000
Monthly Retainer    $1,500        $900      40%      12     $18,000
Logo Design           $500        $350      30%      15      $7,500
Rush Projects       $2,000      $1,600      20%       5     $10,000
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
```

6. Flag offerings with margins below 40% as candidates for price increases.
7. For each underpriced offering, calculate the target price for a desired margin:
   - Target Price = Unit Cost / (1 - Desired Margin)
   - Example: $350 cost, 50% target margin = $350 / 0.50 = $700
