## What it does

\`prd-writer` is a skill that walks the agent through a fixed PRD outline. Five sections come out of it: the problem with user pain points and business impact, the proposed solution with user stories and success metrics, requirements split into functional, technical and design, implementation with dependencies and a timeline estimate, then risks and mitigations. The skill also asks you to state what is in scope and what is not.

It behaves as instructions for the agent rather than a generator with a button. You supply product context, data and constraints; the agent fills the sections in order. The skill takes one argument, the feature name, hinted by `argument-hint`. Research and data are marked recommended but optional, so a PRD still comes out without them — you will just have to invent the metrics yourself.

The skill advises quantitative success metrics and acceptance criteria for the key flows. If you have no baseline number to measure against, the document turns into a restatement of the idea. Worth settling the metric first, then running the skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pmprompt/claude-plugin-product-management --skill prd-writer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/prd-writer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/prd-writer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pmprompt/claude-plugin-product-management --skill prd-writer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/prd-writer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pmprompt/claude-plugin-product-management --skill prd-writer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/prd-writer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pmprompt/claude-plugin-product-management prd-writer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/prd-writer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pmprompt/claude-plugin-product-management --skill prd-writer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pmprompt/claude-plugin-product-management --path skills/prd-writer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/prd-writer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pmprompt/claude-plugin-product-management --skill prd-writer -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- document a new feature so engineers know what to build
- lock the scope before design work starts
- write success metrics you can actually measure
- collect user stories and acceptance criteria for key flows
- list dependencies and risks before estimating the timeline

## Example prompts
- write a PRD for a notification center in our SaaS app
- draft a PRD for the report export feature, context below
- PRD for new-user onboarding, metric is share of users reaching the first action

## Domain Context

This skill implements a proven product management framework. The approach combines best practices from industry leaders and is designed for practical application in day-to-day PM work.

## Input Requirements

- Context about your product, feature, or problem
- Relevant data, research, or constraints (recommended but optional)
- Clear articulation of what you're trying to achieve

# PRD Writer

## When to Use
- Starting a new feature or product initiative
- Need to document requirements for the engineering team
- Stakeholders need a detailed project overview
- Before beginning design or development work
- To align cross-functional teams on scope and goals

## What This Skill Does
Creates structured, comprehensive PRDs covering problem statement, proposed solution, requirements, success metrics, and implementation details.

## Instructions
Help me write a comprehensive PRD for [feature name]. Include:

1. Problem Statement
- Current situation
- User pain points
- Business impact

2. Proposed Solution
- Overview of the approach
- User stories
- Success metrics

3. Requirements
- Functional requirements
- Technical requirements
- Design requirements

4. Implementation
- Dependencies
- Timeline estimate
- Resources needed

5. Risks and Mitigations

Your context:
[Add product context, feature details, and constraints here]

## Best Practices
- Be specific about the problem and user pain points
- Include quantitative success metrics
- Define scope clearly (what's in scope and out of scope)
- Consider technical constraints upfront
- Add detailed user stories for key flows
- Include acceptance criteria

## Example
**Input:** Building a notification center for SaaS app, target users are power users who miss important updates
**Output:** Full PRD with problem statement, user stories, functional/technical requirements, success metrics (reduce missed notifications by 40%), timeline, and risk assessment
