## What it does

The skill feeds your agent a rule set for Chrome Extensions on Manifest V3: 67 rules across 12 categories, ordered by performance impact. The agent leans on them while writing new extension code, reviewing existing code, or moving a project from Manifest V2 to V3.

The rules cover service worker lifecycle, content script optimization, message passing, storage, network and permissions, memory, UI, error handling, and testing. Each rule lives in its own file under `references/` with a category prefix: `sw-`, `content-`, `msg-`, `storage-`, `net-`, `mem-`, `ui-`, `api-`, `style-`, `comp-`, `err-`, `test-`. For instance, `sw-persist-state-storage` says to keep state in `chrome.storage` rather than globals, because the service worker goes to sleep and drops them.

The skill does not replace Chrome docs and does not lint your code on its own. It sets the boundaries the agent generates and edits within. Worth installing if you touch MV3 regularly: without these rules an agent will happily reach for `setTimeout` instead of `chrome.alarms`, or declare a content script on every site.

## Requirements
- Works with: Chrome

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill chrome-extension -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/chrome-extension/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/chrome-extension/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill chrome-extension -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/chrome-extension/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill chrome-extension -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/chrome-extension/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pproenca/dot-skills chrome-extension
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/chrome-extension/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill chrome-extension -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills --path skills/.experimental/chrome-extension
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/chrome-extension/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill chrome-extension -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/.experimental/chrome-extension/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- migrate an extension from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3
- fix a service worker that loses state after sleeping
- shrink the content script and popup bundle
- choose between declarativeNetRequest and webRequest
- plug memory leaks in a content script

## Example prompts
- Write a Manifest V3 content script that highlights links on the page
- Review my service worker against the skill rules and point out lifecycle mistakes
- Help me migrate this extension from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3

# Chrome Extension Best Practices

Comprehensive performance and code quality guide for Chrome Extensions (Manifest V3). Contains 67 rules across 12 categories, prioritized by impact to guide automated refactoring and code generation.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Writing new Chrome extension code
- Migrating from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3
- Optimizing service worker lifecycle and state management
- Implementing content scripts for page interaction
- Debugging performance issues in extensions

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Service Worker Lifecycle | CRITICAL | `sw-` |
| 2 | Content Script Optimization | CRITICAL | `content-` |
| 3 | Message Passing Efficiency | HIGH | `msg-` |
| 4 | Storage Operations | HIGH | `storage-` |
| 5 | Network & Permissions | MEDIUM-HIGH | `net-` |
| 6 | Memory Management | MEDIUM | `mem-` |
| 7 | UI Performance | MEDIUM | `ui-` |
| 8 | API Usage Patterns | LOW-MEDIUM | `api-` |
| 9 | Code Style & Naming | MEDIUM | `style-` |
| 10 | Component Patterns | MEDIUM | `comp-` |
| 11 | Error Handling | HIGH | `err-` |
| 12 | Testing Patterns | MEDIUM | `test-` |

## Quick Reference

### 1. Service Worker Lifecycle (CRITICAL)

- [`sw-persist-state-storage`](references/sw-persist-state-storage.md) - Persist state with chrome.storage instead of global variables
- [`sw-avoid-keepalive`](references/sw-avoid-keepalive.md) - Avoid artificial service worker keep-alive patterns
- [`sw-use-alarms-api`](references/sw-use-alarms-api.md) - Use chrome.alarms instead of setTimeout/setInterval
- [`sw-return-true-async`](references/sw-return-true-async.md) - Return true from message listeners for async responses
- [`sw-register-listeners-toplevel`](references/sw-register-listeners-toplevel.md) - Register event listeners at top level
- [`sw-use-offscreen-for-dom`](references/sw-use-offscreen-for-dom.md) - Use offscreen documents for DOM APIs

### 2. Content Script Optimization (CRITICAL)

- [`content-use-specific-matches`](references/content-use-specific-matches.md) - Use specific URL match patterns
- [`content-use-document-idle`](references/content-use-document-idle.md) - Use document_idle for content script injection
