# pp-weather-goat

A skill for Claude and other agents: weather, NWS severe alerts, air quality, and a straight answer on whether to bike to work.

## What it does

The skill wraps a CLI called `weather-goat-pp-cli`, which pulls data from Open-Meteo and NWS. No API key. The agent runs a command and gets back current conditions, the day's forecast, and any active warnings. A separate `go walk|bike|hike|commute|drive` command returns a GO / CAUTION / STOP verdict with reasoning — wind, precipitation, AQI, ice risk — and each activity has its own thresholds.

There is `compare` for two or more cities side by side, `normal` to check today's highs and lows against the historical average for the same date, and `breathe` for AQI, pollen and UV with an exercise recommendation. The `watch` command polls NWS every 60 seconds during active severe weather and prints new alerts as they arrive. For a morning briefing, set a home location with `config set-location`; after that a no-argument call returns current conditions, today's forecast and active alerts.

Before the first run you need the binary: `npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install weather-goat --cli-only`, then verify with `weather-goat-pp-cli --version`. If `npx` is not an option, there is a fallback through `go install`, which needs Go 1.26.6 or newer. This is not the tool for hyperlocal or commercial-grade meteorology, and it will not cover severe-weather alerts outside the US — NWS is US-only. If `--version` says "command not found" right after install, the binary directory is not on `$PATH`; that is a runtime setup problem, not a skill problem.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-weather-goat -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pp-weather-goat/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pp-weather-goat/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-weather-goat -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pp-weather-goat/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-weather-goat -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pp-weather-goat/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mvanhorn/printing-press-library pp-weather-goat
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pp-weather-goat/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-weather-goat -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library --path cli-skills/pp-weather-goat
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pp-weather-goat/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-weather-goat -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/tree/HEAD/cli-skills/pp-weather-goat/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide whether to bike to work today
- compare weekend weather across two cities
- check if today is unusually hot for the date
- pull active NWS severe weather warnings
- read AQI and UV before a run

## Example prompts
- what's the weather in Seattle today
- should I bike to work
- compare Portland and San Francisco weather this weekend

# Weather GOAT — Printing Press CLI

## Prerequisites: Install the CLI

This skill drives the `weather-goat-pp-cli` binary. **You must verify the CLI is installed before invoking any command from this skill.** If it is missing, install it first:

1. Install via the Printing Press installer. It defaults binaries to `$HOME/.local/bin` on macOS/Linux and `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\PrintingPress\bin` on Windows:
   ```bash
   npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install weather-goat --cli-only
   ```
2. Verify: `weather-goat-pp-cli --version`
3. Ensure the reported install directory is on `$PATH` for the agent/runtime that will invoke this skill.

If the `npx` install fails (no Node, offline, etc.), fall back to a direct Go install (requires Go 1.26.6 or newer):

```bash
go install github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/library/other/weather-goat/cmd/weather-goat-pp-cli@latest
```
