## What it does

The `pp-techmeme` skill drives the `techmeme-pp-cli` binary. It collects Techmeme headlines, caches them locally and exposes commands for search, topic tracking and source analysis. Your agent calls the CLI and gets structured data instead of scraping a page.

The command set covers a few angles. `since` lists headlines from the last N hours, `digest` groups a day's news by topic, and `track` saves topics you care about and checks whether they hit Techmeme. `trending` runs frequency analysis over recent headlines, `velocity` surfaces stories multiple sources picked up in a short window, and `sources` shows which publications dominate the feed. When you know the goal but not the command, `which` maps a plain-language description to the closest match.

Install the CLI before anything else: `npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install techmeme --cli-only`. If `npx` is unavailable, fall back to `go install`, which needs Go 1.26.6 or newer. Run `techmeme-pp-cli --version` to confirm — a "command not found" here means the binary directory is not on `$PATH`, and the skill will not work until that is fixed. The CLI is read-only: it cannot create, publish or change anything on Techmeme.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-techmeme -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pp-techmeme/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pp-techmeme/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-techmeme -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pp-techmeme/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-techmeme -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pp-techmeme/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mvanhorn/printing-press-library pp-techmeme
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pp-techmeme/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-techmeme -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library --path cli-skills/pp-techmeme
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pp-techmeme/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-techmeme -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/tree/HEAD/cli-skills/pp-techmeme/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a morning briefing of overnight tech news
- find every Techmeme headline about a given company
- catch when a topic first hits the feed
- see which publications show up most often on Techmeme
- tell breaking news apart from steady coverage

## Example prompts
- what's happening in tech in the last 12 hours
- show me all Techmeme headlines about Anthropic
- which tech stories are picking up speed right now

# Techmeme — Printing Press CLI

## Prerequisites: Install the CLI

This skill drives the `techmeme-pp-cli` binary. **You must verify the CLI is installed before invoking any command from this skill.** If it is missing, install it first:

1. Install via the Printing Press installer. It defaults binaries to `$HOME/.local/bin` on macOS/Linux and `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\PrintingPress\bin` on Windows:
   ```bash
   npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install techmeme --cli-only
   ```
2. Verify: `techmeme-pp-cli --version`
3. Ensure the reported install directory is on `$PATH` for the agent/runtime that will invoke this skill.

If the `npx` install fails (no Node, offline, etc.), fall back to a direct Go install (requires Go 1.26.6 or newer):

```bash
go install github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/library/productivity/techmeme/cmd/techmeme-pp-cli@latest
```

If `--version` reports "command not found" after install, the runtime cannot see the binary directory on `$PATH`. Do not proceed with skill commands until verification succeeds.

## When to Use This CLI

Use the Techmeme CLI when you need curated, authoritative tech news without opening a browser. Ideal for morning catch-up ('since 8h'), topic monitoring ('track add OpenAI'), source analysis ('sources'), and AI agents that need to answer 'what's happening in tech right now' with structured data.
