## What it does

The skill drives the `hackernews-pp-cli` binary, which pulls stories, comments, jobs and polls off Hacker News. Everything lands in a local SQLite store, so follow-up queries stay cheap and work offline. The `sync` command grabs top/new/best/show/ask/job lists plus recently changed items, and it is the foundation the rest builds on.

What the local layer buys you: `since` shows what climbed, fell or dropped off the front page since your last sync, `velocity` charts a story's rank over time, `controversial` ranks by comment-to-point ratio. There is also `pulse` for per-day mentions of a topic, `repost` to check whether a URL was submitted before, and `search local` for full-text search across everything you have synced. A separate set of commands mines Who is Hiring threads for languages, remote share and companies.

Install the CLI first: `npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install hackernews --cli-only`. If `npx` fails — no Node, offline — fall back to `go install`, which needs Go 1.26.6 or newer. Then run `hackernews-pp-cli --version`; if the command is not found, the binary sits outside the `$PATH` of whichever runtime invokes the skill, and nothing else will work until that is fixed. Every command is read-only: you cannot post, comment or upvote through it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-hackernews -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pp-hackernews/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pp-hackernews/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-hackernews -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pp-hackernews/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-hackernews -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pp-hackernews/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mvanhorn/printing-press-library pp-hackernews
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pp-hackernews/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-hackernews -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**

gemini skills install https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library --path cli-skills/pp-hackernews
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pp-hackernews/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-hackernews -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/tree/HEAD/cli-skills/pp-hackernews/SKILL.md
## When to use it
- see what moved on the HN front page since the last sync
- check whether a URL was submitted before
- tell if a story is still climbing or already cresting
- aggregate Who is Hiring threads across several months
- search old stories and comments without hitting the network
## Example prompts
- check hacker news and show me what changed since yesterday
- search hn for vector database posts this month
- hn who is hiring — pull language stats for the last 3 months
# Hacker News — Printing Press CLI
## Prerequisites: Install the CLI
This skill drives the `hackernews-pp-cli` binary. **You must verify the CLI is installed before invoking any command from this skill.** If it is missing, install it first:
1. Install via the Printing Press installer. It defaults binaries to `$HOME/.local/bin` on macOS/Linux and `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\PrintingPress\bin` on Windows:
   ```bash
   npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install hackernews --cli-only
   ```
2. Verify: `hackernews-pp-cli --version`
3. Ensure the reported install directory is on `$PATH` for the agent/runtime that will invoke this skill.
If the `npx` install fails (no Node, offline, etc.), fall back to a direct Go install (requires Go 1.26.6 or newer):
```bash
go install github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/library/media-and-entertainment/hackernews/cmd/hackernews-pp-cli@latest
```
If `--version` reports "command not found" after install, the runtime cannot see the binary directory on `$PATH`. Do not proceed with skill commands until verification succeeds.
