# pp-arxiv

A skill that lets your agent search arXiv and pull paper metadata. Handy when you need recent work in a category or one specific paper by ID.

## What it does

The skill drives the `arxiv-pp-cli` binary, which talks to the public arXiv Atom API. Through it the agent searches papers with a query expression, fetches recent work in a category sorted by submitted date, and pulls an exact paper by arXiv ID or versioned ID. No authentication is involved.

Install the CLI first: `npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install arxiv --cli-only`. Binaries land in `$HOME/.local/bin` on macOS and Linux, and in `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\PrintingPress\bin` on Windows. Run `arxiv-pp-cli --version` afterwards and make sure that directory sits on `$PATH` for whichever runtime invokes the skill. If `npx` fails — no Node, offline — fall back to `go install`, which needs Go 1.26.6 or newer.

Every command is read-only, so creating, updating, deleting or publishing through this CLI is off the table. The `--agent` flag expands to `--json --compact --no-input --no-color --yes`, and `--select` keeps just the fields you name, like `entries.id,entries.title`. That matters on verbose responses. Output arrives in an envelope with `.meta.source`, so you can tell live data from local.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-arxiv -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pp-arxiv/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pp-arxiv/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-arxiv -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pp-arxiv/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-arxiv -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pp-arxiv/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mvanhorn/printing-press-library pp-arxiv
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pp-arxiv/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-arxiv -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library --path cli-skills/pp-arxiv
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pp-arxiv/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mvanhorn/printing-press-library --skill pp-arxiv -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/tree/HEAD/cli-skills/pp-arxiv/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find recent papers in a category like cs.AI
- pull metadata for one paper by arXiv ID
- trim a response down to titles and IDs
- write search output to a file or post it to a webhook
- verify the CLI setup with the doctor command

## Example prompts
- find the five latest papers in cs.AI
- show me the metadata for 1706.03762
- save the cat:cs.AI search results to a file

# arXiv — Printing Press CLI

## Prerequisites: Install the CLI

This skill drives the `arxiv-pp-cli` binary. **You must verify the CLI is installed before invoking any command from this skill.** If it is missing, install it first:

1. Install via the Printing Press installer. It defaults binaries to `$HOME/.local/bin` on macOS/Linux and `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\PrintingPress\bin` on Windows:
   ```bash
   npx -y @mvanhorn/printing-press-library install arxiv --cli-only
   ```
2. Verify: `arxiv-pp-cli --version`
3. Ensure the reported install directory is on `$PATH` for the agent/runtime that will invoke this skill.

If the `npx` install fails (no Node, offline, etc.), fall back to a direct Go install (requires Go 1.26.6 or newer):

```bash
go install github.com/mvanhorn/printing-press-library/library/other/arxiv/cmd/arxiv-pp-cli@latest
```

If `--version` reports "command not found" after install, the runtime cannot see the binary directory on `$PATH`. Do not proceed with skill commands until verification succeeds.

## When Not to Use This CLI

Do not activate this CLI for requests that require creating, updating, deleting, publishing, commenting, upvoting, inviting, ordering, sending messages, booking, purchasing, or changing remote state. This printed CLI exposes read-only commands for inspection, export, sync, and analysis.

## Unique Capabilities

These capabilities aren't available in any other tool for this API.

### Research discovery

- **`query`** — Search arXiv with documented query expressions and agent-friendly output controls.
- **`query`** — Fetch latest AI/research papers by category using submitted-date sorting and bounded result counts.
- **`query`** — Fetch exact papers by arXiv ID or versioned arXiv ID.

## Command Reference

**query** — Manage query

- `arxiv-pp-cli query --search-query 'cat:cs.AI' --max-results 5` — Search arXiv papers or fetch recent papers by category.
- `arxiv-pp-cli query --id-list 1706.03762 --max-results 1` — Fetch exact papers by arXiv ID or versioned arXiv ID.
