# powershell-master

A skill for PowerShell work: cmdlet syntax, PSGallery modules, CI/CD pipeline patterns and security. Useful whenever the agent writes a .ps1 or edits a pipeline.

## What it does

The skill activates on its own for PowerShell tasks: writing and reviewing `.ps1` files, finding and installing modules, automating Azure, AWS and Microsoft 365, debugging and tuning scripts. It covers Windows, Linux and macOS, so the same script can be made to run on all three.

Inside is a reference map the agent loads only as needed: cross-platform patterns (OS detection, encoding, paths), PSGallery and modules such as Az, Microsoft.Graph, PnP and AWS Tools, pipeline setups for GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps and Bitbucket, syntax and Pester tests, security topics like JEA and Constrained Language Mode. A pre-flight checklist comes with it: version check, `try/catch`, parameter validation, no aliases, `Join-Path` instead of string concatenation.

One rule is worth remembering up front: on Windows the skill insists on backslashes in file paths, so `D:/repos/project/file.tsx` counts as a mistake. It also states that new documentation files are not created unless the user asks — edits go into the existing README. Validating scripts calls for `Invoke-ScriptAnalyzer` and `Invoke-Pester`.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, Azure, Azure DevOps

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill powershell-master -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/powershell-master/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/powershell-master/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill powershell-master -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/powershell-master/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill powershell-master -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/powershell-master/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace powershell-master
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/powershell-master/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill powershell-master -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --path plugins/powershell-master/skills/powershell-master
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/powershell-master/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill powershell-master -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace/tree/HEAD/plugins/powershell-master/skills/powershell-master/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a cross-platform .ps1 with version checks and error handling
- find and install a module from PSGallery
- add a PowerShell step to GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps
- review a legacy script and strip out aliases
- keep credentials out of code and turn on Script Block Logging

## Example prompts
- Write a PowerShell 7 script that builds a report from the logs and runs on Windows and Linux
- Run Invoke-ScriptAnalyzer on this .ps1 and list what needs fixing
- Set up a GitHub Actions job that runs Pester tests on three platforms

## CRITICAL GUIDELINES

### Windows File Path Requirements

**MANDATORY: Always Use Backslashes on Windows for File Paths**

When using Edit or Write tools on Windows, you MUST use backslashes (`\`) in file paths, NOT forward slashes (`/`).

Examples:
- WRONG: `D:/repos/project/file.tsx`
- CORRECT: `D:\repos\project\file.tsx`

This applies to:
- Edit tool file_path parameter
- Write tool file_path parameter
- All file operations on Windows systems

### Documentation Guidelines

NEVER create new documentation files unless explicitly requested by the user.

- **Priority**: Update existing README.md files rather than creating new documentation
- **Repository cleanliness**: Keep repository root clean - only README.md unless user requests otherwise
- **Style**: Documentation should be concise, direct, and professional - avoid AI-generated tone
- **User preference**: Only create additional .md files when user specifically asks for documentation

---

Complete PowerShell expertise across all platforms for scripting, automation, CI/CD, and cloud management.

## When to Activate

PROACTIVELY activate for ANY PowerShell-related task:

- **PowerShell Scripts** - Creating, reviewing, optimizing any .ps1 file
- **Cmdlets & Modules** - Finding, installing, using any PowerShell modules
- **Cross-Platform** - Windows, Linux, macOS PowerShell tasks
- **CI/CD Integration** - GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket Pipelines
```
