## What it does

The skill gives the agent a reference for designing PostgreSQL schemas and speeding up queries. It ships as rules with SQL examples: native types (`UUID`, `JSONB`, `ARRAY`, `INET`, `CIDR`), `TIMESTAMPTZ` over `TIMESTAMP`, `NOT NULL` and `CHECK` constraints, and declarative partitioning by RANGE, LIST or HASH for large tables.

Indexing gets its own section. B-tree for equality and range lookups, GIN for `JSONB` and arrays, GiST for geometric and range types, BRIN for large naturally ordered data, plus partial and covering indexes. There are queries against `pg_stat_user_indexes` to spot unused indexes and `EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS, FORMAT TEXT)` for slow plans. On JSONB the advice is blunt: move frequently queried fields into regular columns instead of filtering through `@>` and `?`.

Connection pooling covers PgBouncer and pgpool-II, session timeouts (`statement_timeout`, `lock_timeout`, `idle_in_transaction_session_timeout`), short transactions, advisory locks and a query for finding blocking sessions. The text cuts off partway through the table bloat check, so autovacuum only gets a general mention. Nothing here executes on its own — it is a reference the agent reads while writing SQL. On PostgreSQL older than 12 the `MATERIALIZED` and `NOT MATERIALIZED` CTE hints won't do anything.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill postgresql-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/postgresql-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/postgresql-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill postgresql-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/postgresql-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill postgresql-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/postgresql-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills postgresql-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/postgresql-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill postgresql-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path postgresql-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/postgresql-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill postgresql-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/postgresql-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick the right column type for money, timestamps or IDs
- split a large table into partitions by date
- find an index that slows writes and never gets used
- read a slow query plan with EXPLAIN ANALYZE
- set timeouts and a connection pool for short transactions

## Example prompts
- review the orders table schema and tell me which types and constraints to change
- why is this query doing a seq scan? read the plan and suggest an index
- write the DDL for an events table partitioned by created_at

# PostgreSQL Best Practices

## Core Principles

- Leverage PostgreSQL's advanced features for robust data modeling
- Optimize queries using EXPLAIN ANALYZE and proper indexing strategies
- Use native PostgreSQL data types appropriately
- Implement proper connection pooling and resource management
- Follow PostgreSQL-specific security best practices

## Schema Design

### Data Types

- Use appropriate native types: `UUID`, `JSONB`, `ARRAY`, `INET`, `CIDR`
- Prefer `TIMESTAMPTZ` over `TIMESTAMP` for timezone-aware applications
- Use `TEXT` instead of `VARCHAR` when no length limit is needed
- Consider `NUMERIC` for precise decimal calculations (financial data)
- Use `SERIAL` or `BIGSERIAL` for auto-incrementing IDs, or `UUID` for distributed systems

```sql
CREATE TABLE orders (
    order_id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
    customer_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES customers(customer_id),
    order_data JSONB NOT NULL DEFAULT '{}',
    tags TEXT[] DEFAULT '{}',
    total_amount NUMERIC(12, 2) NOT NULL,
    created_at TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL DEFAULT NOW(),
    updated_at TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL DEFAULT NOW()
);
```

### Table Design

- Always define primary keys
- Use foreign keys with appropriate ON DELETE/UPDATE actions
- Add NOT NULL constraints where appropriate
- Use CHECK constraints for data validation
- Consider partitioning for large tables

```sql
CREATE TABLE products (
    product_id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
    sku VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL UNIQUE,
    name TEXT NOT NULL,
    price NUMERIC(10, 2) NOT NULL CHECK (price >= 0),
    status VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL DEFAULT 'active'
        CHECK (status IN ('active', 'inactive', 'discontinued')),
    metadata JSONB DEFAULT '{}'
);
```

### Partitioning

- Use declarative partitioning for large tables (millions of rows)
- Choose appropriate partition strategy: RANGE, LIST, or HASH
- Create indexes on partitioned tables after partitioning

```sql
CREATE TABLE events (
    event_id BIGSERIAL,
    event_type VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL,
    payload JSONB,
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 9c80cbdbbd2c3ae3

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 9c80cbdbbd2c3ae3 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
