## What it does

Use this skill to inspect completed simulations: extract fields at selected timesteps, analyze time trends, build line profiles, and calculate statistics or distributions. It can also calculate gradients, fluxes, volume fractions, and interface area, compare results with analytical or experimental data, and create analysis reports.

The skill includes Python scripts for field extraction, time-series analysis, profile extraction, statistics, derived quantities, comparisons, and report generation. Supported input formats listed in the guide are JSON, CSV, HDF5, and VTK. Read field names and grid dimensions from the actual files before extracting data; the guide explicitly cautions against guessing either. You’ll also need to choose the fields, timesteps, and output format for the analysis.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill post-processing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/post-processing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/post-processing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill post-processing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/post-processing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill post-processing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/post-processing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills post-processing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/post-processing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill post-processing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --path skills/simulation-workflow/post-processing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/post-processing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill post-processing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- extract a field at a selected timestep
- check whether a quantity has reached steady state
- sample a field along a line through the domain
- calculate a gradient or volume fraction from field data
- compare simulation output with reference data

## Example prompts
- Analyze `total_energy` in `results/history.json` and check whether the simulation has reached steady state.
- Extract a `concentration` profile from `results/field_0100.json` along the line from `0,0.5,0` to `1,0.5,0`.
- Compare these simulation results with the reference data and prepare a summary report.

# Post-Processing Skill

Analyze and extract meaningful information from simulation output data.

## Goal

Transform raw simulation output into actionable insights through field extraction, statistical analysis, derived quantities, visualizations, and comparison with reference data.

## Inputs to Gather

Before running post-processing scripts, collect:

1. **Output Data Location**
   - Path to simulation output files (JSON, CSV, HDF5, VTK)
   - Time step/snapshot indices of interest
   - Field names to extract

   > **Read field names from the file, never assume them.** Before extracting,
   > open the output file (or run `field_extractor.py --input <file> --list
   > --json`) and use only the field names that actually appear under `fields`.
   > Do not invent fields such as `temperature` if they are not present, and do
   > not assume a grid size — read the real `shape`/`count` from the data.

2. **Analysis Type**
   - Field extraction (spatial data at specific times)
   - Time series (temporal evolution of quantities)
   - Line profiles (1D cuts through domain)
```
