# polish

A skill for the last pass over a UI: alignment, spacing, states, consistent copy. Run it once the work is functionally done and needs finishing touches.

## What it does

\`polish` is a final quality pass for frontend work. It walks several layers at once: grid alignment, spacing, typography, contrast and colour tokens, interaction states, micro-transitions, copy and icons. The goal is to make the existing hierarchy more precise, not to decorate a weak foundation.

It runs by protocol. First it loads `$frontend-design` for design principles and the context gathering protocol, and if no design context exists yet it requires `$setup`. Then comes a pre-polish assessment: is the work functionally complete, which known issues should be preserved as TODOs, and what is the quality bar — MVP or flagship. Along the way it consults the `frontend-design/reference` docs on hierarchy, text readability, semantic colour, surface separation and image treatment.

This is the last step, not the first. If hierarchy, structure or the technical foundation still need major changes, polishing is wasted effort — fix those first. Zero-data surfaces have their own skill, `empty-state`, and the broader activation flow is covered by `onboard`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill polish -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/polish/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/polish/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill polish -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/polish/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill polish -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/polish/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui polish
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/polish/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill polish -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/polish
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/polish/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill polish -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/polish/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- snap elements to the grid and kill random gaps
- fill in the missing hover, focus and error states
- make headings and labels use one consistent style
- check text contrast and keyboard focus rings
- smooth out janky transitions and easing

## Example prompts
- /polish the dashboard home page
- /polish signup form, check the error states
- /polish product card before release

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/polish`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first. Additionally gather: quality bar (MVP vs flagship).

---

Perform a meticulous final pass to catch all the small details that separate good work from great work. The difference between shipped and polished.

Polish should make existing hierarchy and systems more precise. It should not be used to decorate a weak foundation.

Consult the `empty-state` skill when zero-data surfaces themselves need design work. Use `onboard` when the broader activation flow, aha moment, or first-run strategy is the real issue.

## Pre-Polish Assessment

Understand the current state and goals:

1. **Review completeness**:
   - Is it functionally complete?
   - Are there known issues to preserve (mark with TODOs)?
   - What's the quality bar? (MVP vs flagship feature?)
   - When does it ship? (How much time for polish?)

2. **Identify polish areas**:
   - Visual inconsistencies
   - Spacing and alignment issues
   - Interaction state gaps
   - Copy inconsistencies
   - Edge cases and error states
   - Loading and transition smoothness

**CRITICAL**: Polish is the last step, not the first. Don't polish work that's not functionally complete.

## Polish Systematically

Work through these dimensions methodically:

Consult the [hierarchy checklist](../frontend-design/reference/hierarchy-checklist.md) for grayscale tests, action hierarchy, and label/value treatment.
Consult the [text hierarchy and readability](../frontend-design/reference/text-hierarchy-and-readability.md) for line length, line-height, alignment, baseline, and title restraint.
Consult the [action hierarchy](../frontend-design/reference/action-hierarchy.md) when checking whether actions lead or recede correctly.
Consult the [semantic color](../frontend-design/reference/semantic-color.md) when checking alerts, status, and tinted semantic surfaces.
Consult the [design-system alignment](../frontend-design/reference/design-system-alignment.md) when deciding whether a polish issue is really local detail or system drift.
Consult the [surface separation](../frontend-design/reference/surface-separation.md) when borders, cards, shadows, overlap, or background shifts feel noisy or inconsistent.
```
