# point-cloud-lidar

A skill for LAS, LAZ and COPC data: ground classification, DTM/DSM/CHM surfaces, canopy and building metrics, vertical datums. Useful when the input is a raw cloud.

## What it does

The skill walks from raw returns to elevation and structure products you can defend. It starts with `pdal info input.laz --summary` to read point count, density, CRS, classes and return numbers. Density sets the raster resolution you can actually reach, and when CRS metadata is absent the skill tells you to get the datum from the provider instead of guessing.

A PDAL pipeline template ships inside: reprojection, outlier removal, ground classification with `filters.smrf`, then a LAS writer. Denoising runs before classification, because low outliers wreck SMRF and CSF. The `slope` and `window` values depend on terrain, and the window should match the largest object that is not ground. Vendor ground class gets audited on a few cross-sections and reclassified where it fails.

Vertical datums get their own section. Saying the datum in a reply is not enough: it belongs in the file itself, as a LAS/LAZ header VLR, a GeoTIFF CRS or PROJJSON in a sidecar, together with the geoid model name and version and any per-tile offsets applied. A height product with an unresolved datum should not be published. Photogrammetric clouds are kept separate from LiDAR here, since they carry no returns and no canopy penetration, so a surface over forest is a canopy model.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muend/geoai-skills --skill point-cloud-lidar -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/point-cloud-lidar/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/point-cloud-lidar/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muend/geoai-skills --skill point-cloud-lidar -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/point-cloud-lidar/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muend/geoai-skills --skill point-cloud-lidar -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/point-cloud-lidar/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install muend/geoai-skills point-cloud-lidar
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/point-cloud-lidar/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muend/geoai-skills --skill point-cloud-lidar -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/muend/geoai-skills --path skills/point-cloud-lidar
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/point-cloud-lidar/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add muend/geoai-skills --skill point-cloud-lidar -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/muend/geoai-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/point-cloud-lidar/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- inspect a LAS/LAZ file and see what it holds: classes, returns, CRS
- build a DTM from ground points without inventing detail beyond the density
- produce a CHM that is not pocked with within-crown pits
- agree on a vertical datum across two acquisitions before differencing them
- measure building height and canopy cover per grid cell

## Example prompts
- Run `pdal info --summary` on `input.laz` and tell me what raster resolution this density supports
- Build a PDAL pipeline: reprojection, outlier removal, ground classification, write to `classified.laz`
- Audit the vendor ground class on cross-sections and reclassify where it stops hugging the terrain

# Point Clouds & LiDAR

Purpose: from raw returns to defensible elevation and structure products.
The recurring failure modes: **trusting vendor classification blindly**,
**mixing return types in surfaces** (DSM from last returns, DTM with
vegetation), and **ignoring point density** when choosing output
resolution.

## First contact with any cloud

```bash
pdal info input.laz --summary        # counts, bounds, CRS, classes, returns
```

Report before touching anything: point count, density (pts/m² — decides
achievable raster resolution), CRS (horizontal AND vertical datum —
ellipsoidal vs orthometric heights differ by the geoid undulation, tens of
meters in places), classification present?, return numbers present?,
flight-line overlap artifacts. A cloud without CRS metadata: resolve from
the provider, never assume.

## Format and scale

| Format | Use |
|---|---|
| **LAZ** | Compressed interchange/archive — default |
| **COPC** (cloud-optimized LAZ) | Streaming/HTTP range access, web viewers |
| LAS | Only when a tool can't read LAZ |
| Entwine/EPT | Massive multi-tile collections, indexed |

Tile large collections; process per-tile with buffered edges (~2× search
radius) to avoid seam artifacts in filters and surfaces; drop the buffer
on write.

## PDAL pipeline pattern

```json
{
  "pipeline": [
    "input.laz",
    {"type": "filters.reprojection", "out_srs": "EPSG:32636"},
    {"type": "filters.outlier", "method": "statistical",
