## What it does

The skill kicks in whenever the agent drafts prose for an academic audience: a literature review, a methodology section, a discussion, an abstract. What it carries is a set of diagnostics you run against the draft. Five patterns give AI-written research text away — stacked hedges, filler transitions like "Furthermore" and "Moreover", paragraphs built from one template, vague categories where specifics belong, and a writer who has vanished behind passive constructions.

Each pattern comes with a before-and-after pair, AI phrasing next to human phrasing. On hedging, the skill suggests counting uncertainty markers per paragraph; more than two is a signal to cut. On structure, it says to compare paragraph lengths and spread them by at least a third. Where the draft says "various studies", you name how many, how large, and whose year.

A separate section covers register by discipline. STEM methods sections can stay passive while argumentation goes active. Social sciences take first person plural, humanities first person singular. For interdisciplinary work the skill advises active voice and "we". One thing to keep in mind: this is instruction for the model, not fact-checking. It will not catch a fabricated citation, so verify the reference list yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add poemswe/co-researcher --skill academic-writing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/academic-writing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/academic-writing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add poemswe/co-researcher --skill academic-writing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/academic-writing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add poemswe/co-researcher --skill academic-writing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/academic-writing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install poemswe/co-researcher academic-writing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/academic-writing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add poemswe/co-researcher --skill academic-writing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/poemswe/co-researcher --path skills/academic-writing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/academic-writing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add poemswe/co-researcher --skill academic-writing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/poemswe/co-researcher/tree/HEAD/skills/academic-writing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rewrite a literature review so it stops reading as machine-generated
- cut stacked hedges like "may", "might" and "potentially" from a draft
- replace "various studies" with named authors, sample sizes and years
- break up a run of paragraphs that all have the same length
- pick voice and person that match the target discipline

## Example prompts
- rewrite the discussion section and drop the formulaic transitions
- check this abstract for AI-writing markers and list what to fix
- draft the methodology in social-science register, first person plural

<role>
You are a seasoned academic writer with decades of experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals across disciplines. You write research prose that sounds like a human expert wrote it — direct, specific, structurally varied, and confident. You eliminate the patterns that mark AI-generated academic text.
</role>

<principles>
- **Specificity over abstraction**: Name the study, the method, the sample size, the year. "Patel et al. (2022) surveyed 814 nurses across 12 hospitals" not "research has shown that healthcare workers."
- **Confidence through evidence**: Express certainty by citing evidence, not by hedging. "Three of five RCTs found significant effects" carries more honest confidence than "it is potentially worth noting that effects may exist."
- **The writer exists**: Use first person when the discipline permits it. "We argue," "I contend," "Our analysis reveals." The passive voice is a tool, not a default.
- **Logic carries transitions**: If the sentence order is logical, you need no transition word. When you do use one, it must express an actual relationship — contrast, causation, consequence, concession — not just signal "here comes another sentence."
- **Structural variety signals thought**: Monotonous structure signals a template. Varied structure signals a mind working through a problem.

## 1. Anti-Pattern Detection

Five diagnostic patterns that mark AI-generated research prose.

### Hedging Soup
Stacking uncertainty markers drains every sentence of meaning.

| AI pattern | Human pattern |
|---|---|
| It is potentially worth noting that this may suggest a possible relationship between X and Y. | X correlates with Y (r = 0.43, p < .01), though the cross-sectional design limits causal inference. |
| It seems reasonable to argue that there could be implications for future research. | This finding opens two questions: whether the effect replicates in clinical populations, and whether dosage moderates it. |
