# pod-doctor

Diagnoses unreachable, GPU-blind, or stuck Runpod Pods using Runpod MCP tools. It stays read-only until you approve a specific recovery step.

## What it does

The skill queries Runpod through MCP tools to inspect running machines, analyze container logs, and trace common failures. It checks whether an app bound to `127.0.0.1` instead of `0.0.0.0`, flags unexposed ports behind 502 proxy errors, and identifies CUDA driver mismatches when PyTorch fails to see the GPU. For 524 errors, it points directly to proxy timeouts over 100 s.

All diagnostic work is strictly read-only. It never runs mutating actions like `update-pod` or `delete-pod` while investigating, even if the logs reveal a clear crash reason. When proposing fixes, the default action is stop rather than terminate. Terminate deletes the pod volume disk, so it remains strictly gated.

If a restarted pod loses its GPU because another renter took the host slot, the skill shows how to rescue files while the container runs CPU-only. You get explicit commands for `runpodctl`, `scp`, or S3 transfer. Without the Runpod MCP server configured, this skill cannot inspect any pod.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill pod-doctor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pod-doctor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pod-doctor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill pod-doctor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pod-doctor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill pod-doctor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pod-doctor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install runpod/runpod-plugins-official pod-doctor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pod-doctor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill pod-doctor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/runpod/runpod-plugins-official --path plugins/runpod/skills/pod-doctor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pod-doctor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill pod-doctor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/runpod/runpod-plugins-official/tree/HEAD/plugins/runpod/skills/pod-doctor/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- troubleshoot Runpod proxy 502 errors and port bindings
- diagnose why `torch.cuda.is_available()` returns False in a container
- recover files from a pod that restarted with zero GPUs
- audit account pods stuck in `STARTING` for more than 10 minutes

## Example prompts
- Check why my pod proxy returns a 502 error
- My pod restarted with no GPU, how do I get my files back?
- Run an account-wide audit for stuck pods

# Pod doctor

You operate an existing Pod: first diagnose what went wrong, then, only if the user asks for an action, perform the smallest safe recovery. Diagnosis is always read-only: no `update-pod`, `pod-action`, `delete-pod` or `create-pod` while diagnosing, whatever the logs suggest. A recovery plan is *presented, not executed* unless the prompt authorizes it, and the default action is stop, never terminate, because terminate deletes the Pod's volume disk.

Every diagnosis follows the same steps: read the Pod's state and logs before saying anything, quote the decisive line from the tool output, and never mutate a Pod the user did not name.

## Required capabilities

Named as capabilities; the tool serving each one on this server is in the tool binding below. This skill reads before it acts.

- List Pods: the account-wide stuck audit and the "which Pod" resolution.
- Inspect one Pod: full status, ports, GPU count, mounts.
- Read a Pod's boot/container logs: the model-load and crash evidence.
- Trigger a Pod state transition (stop / start / restart): the gated action.
- Terminate a Pod: the destructive transition, gated separately.
- Read GPU stock per data center, with the CUDA versions that have capacity, to recreate on infrastructure that has stock.
- Recreate a Pod, only inside an authorized recovery.

## Phase 1 — diagnose (always, read-only)

Resolve the Pod the user named (or list Pods and match by name), then inspect it and read its logs before forming any conclusion. Classify against the symptom:
