## What it does

The skill examines a plugin repository and explains how its main parts fit together: `.claude-plugin/plugin.json`, `marketplace.json`, `commands/`, `agents/`, `skills/`, and `hooks/`. It includes schemas, templates, checklists, validation steps, and troubleshooting paths for plugin development.

Its workflow starts with a read-only review of the repository layout. It then suggests a small, controlled next step, such as scaffolding a plugin, adding a component, validating the structure, or testing through a development marketplace. Available commands include `/plugin-development:init`, `/plugin-development:add-command`, `/plugin-development:add-skill`, `/plugin-development:add-agent`, `/plugin-development:add-hook`, `/plugin-development:validate`, and `/plugin-development:test-local`.

The skill asks before making edits. Hook scripts also need execute permission, and installed plugins should build paths with `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}`; relative paths can work during development and fail after installation.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template --skill plugin-authoring -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/plugin-authoring/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template --skill plugin-authoring -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template --skill plugin-authoring -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template plugin-authoring
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/plugin-authoring/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template --skill plugin-authoring -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template --path plugins/plugin-development/skills/plugin-authoring
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template --skill plugin-authoring -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ivan-magda/claude-code-plugin-template/tree/HEAD/plugins/plugin-development/skills/plugin-authoring/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a new plugin
- validate manifests and component directories
- add a command, skill, agent, or hook
- trace a plugin or hook that does not run
- test a plugin through a local marketplace

## Example prompts
- Create a plugin skeleton named `my-plugin` with `/plugin-development:init <name>`.
- Check the manifest, directory layout, and hooks with `/plugin-development:validate`.
- Add a skill and define when it should activate using `/plugin-development:add-skill <name> <when-to-use>`.

# Plugin Authoring (Skill)

You are the canonical guide for Claude Code plugin development. Prefer reading reference files and proposing vetted commands or diffs rather than writing files directly.

**Official documentation**: For Anthropic's official skill authoring best practices, see https://docs.claude.com/en/docs/agents-and-tools/agent-skills/best-practices

## Triggers & Scope

Activate whenever context includes `.claude-plugin/`, `plugin.json`, `marketplace.json`, `commands/`, `agents/`, `skills/`, or `hooks/`.

## Flow of Operation

1. **Diagnose** current repo layout (read-only)
2. **Propose** the minimal safe action (scaffold, validate, or review)
3. **Execute** via `/plugin-development:...` commands when the user agrees
4. **Escalate** to the **plugin-reviewer** agent for deep audits
5. **Guardrails**: default to read-only; ask before edits

## Checklists

### Component Checklist

```
□ .claude-plugin/plugin.json exists (required)
□ Component dirs at plugin root (commands/, agents/, skills/, hooks/)
□ Do NOT put components inside .claude-plugin/ directory
□ Commands use kebab-case naming
□ Skills have valid frontmatter (name + description required, optional: model, allowed-tools)
□ Skills name validation:
  - Matches directory name
  - Lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens only
  - Max 64 characters
  - No reserved words ('anthropic', 'claude')
  - No XML tags
□ Hooks use ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT} for paths (not relative paths)
□ All scripts are executable (chmod +x)
```

### Release Checklist

```
□ plugin.json: name/version/keywords present
