## What it does

This skill equips Claude Code with structured workflows for Python data visualization. The assistant learns when to rely on concise `plotly.express` methods for tabular pandas data and when to switch to granular `graph_objects` for custom figure layouts, 3D meshes, and complex annotations.

The reference material covers over 40 chart variations, including candlesticks, heatmaps, density maps, and violin plots. It also guides the agent through grid subplots with `make_subplots`, styling themes, hover templates, and time sliders.

Static image generation for PNG, PDF, or SVG formats requires the `kaleido` package. Without that dependency installed, Plotly will only output standalone HTML files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill scientific/plotly
```

2. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add davila7/claude-code-templates --skill plotly -a claude-code
```

3. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/plotly/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/plotly/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/plotly/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/plotly/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install davila7/claude-code-templates plotly
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/plotly/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates --path cli-tool/components/skills/scientific/plotly
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/plotly/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/skills/scientific/plotly

## When to use it
- generate interactive statistical plots from pandas DataFrames
- build financial candlestick figures with time-range sliders
- assemble multi-panel dashboards using `make_subplots`
- export interactive visualizations into standalone HTML files

## Example prompts
- Create a correlation heatmap from this dataset using plotly.express
- Build a candlestick chart with a date rangeslider and save it as HTML
- Set up a 2x2 dashboard using graph_objects subplots with a dark theme
