# playwright-automation

Teaches the agent to write stable Playwright E2E tests in TypeScript: Page Object Model, fixtures, auto-waiting, parallel runs. Useful when starting a suite or rewriting flaky ones.

## What it does

The skill sets a discipline that lets a test suite survive a refactor. Locators go by role and label rather than CSS: `getByRole`, then `getByLabel`, then `getByTestId`. Auto-waiting is built into every action and web-first assertion, so `waitForTimeout` never shows up in the code. An explicit do-not list blocks three agent habits: timeouts, CSS by default, and the legacy `page.click()` family.

Inside you get discovery questions, an `e2e/` layout with fixtures, pages and tests, a ready `playwright.config.ts` with `fullyParallel`, retries and traces, plus a `global-setup.ts` that writes `storageState` before Chromium runs. The guidance is meant to be calibrated to team maturity, from Chromium plus a handful of critical-path tests up to a full browser matrix with visual baselines. JavaScript projects are covered too — same patterns without type annotations, checked with `node --check` and `--list` instead of `tsc`.

It is not for fixing a single flaky test at runtime, not for bulk selector regeneration after a UI refactor, not for visual baselines, and not for WCAG audits; the same repository ships separate skills for those. One thing to check before you rely on it: a fresh `BrowserContext` does not isolate server-side accounts, carts or orders, so tests that mutate shared state need independent records or a clean database, or execution order will start to matter.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill playwright-automation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/playwright-automation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/playwright-automation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill playwright-automation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/playwright-automation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill playwright-automation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/playwright-automation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills playwright-automation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/playwright-automation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill playwright-automation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/playwright-automation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/playwright-automation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill playwright-automation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/playwright-automation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- start a new Playwright E2E suite from scratch
- rewrite flaky tests while migrating off Cypress or Selenium
- split tests into Page Object Model classes and fixtures
- set up parallel execution and sharding in CI
- decide between TypeScript and JavaScript for an existing project

## Example prompts
- Write a Playwright E2E test for the login page using getByRole and getByLabel locators
- Create playwright.config.ts with fullyParallel, trace on first retry, and a setup project for storageState
- Reorganize the current tests into e2e/pages and e2e/fixtures following Page Object Model

<objective>
How an expert agent writes stable, maintainable, production-grade Playwright tests in TypeScript. The failure this prevents: AI agents reflexively reach for the three patterns that produce suites which pass once and flake forever — never use `waitForTimeout`, never default to CSS selectors, and avoid the legacy `page.click()` family. This skill encodes the auto-waiting, user-facing-locator, fixture-based discipline that makes a suite survive a refactor.
</objective>

## Discovery Questions

Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first — if it exists, use it and skip any question answered there. Then ask only what's missing:

1. **TypeScript or JavaScript?** Match what the project already uses. For a new suite TypeScript is strongly recommended — it catches locator and assertion mistakes at compile time, and the examples here use it. In a JavaScript project or a fixed `.mjs` harness, write plain ESM with the same patterns (drop the type annotations), and check it with `node --check` and `--list` instead of `tsc`.
