## What it does

Two metadata types with reusable picklists fall under this skill. A GlobalValueSet is defined once and then attached to any number of picklist fields. A StandardValueSet is the catalog behind a built-in list such as Industry or Lead Source: the set name is fixed, yet you can still edit values and append new ones.

The skill carries the XML rules and the deployment errors that come with them. For a GlobalValueSet the developer name is read from the filename rather than a `<fullName>` tag, and `<masterLabel>`, `<sorted>` plus at least one `<customValue>` are mandatory. Never write the `__gvs` suffix into metadata — both the file and the field reference use the bare developer name. A field points at the set through `<valueSetName>`.

A one-off list on a single field with no reuse belongs to `platform-custom-field-generate` instead. Running this skill needs `sf` 2.0.0 or newer and the `metadata-grounding` MCP server with its `query_metadata` and `search_metadata` tools.

## Requirements
- Works with: Salesforce

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-value-set-generate -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/platform-value-set-generate/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/platform-value-set-generate/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-value-set-generate -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/platform-value-set-generate/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-value-set-generate -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/platform-value-set-generate/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install forcedotcom/sf-skills platform-value-set-generate
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/platform-value-set-generate/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-value-set-generate -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills --path skills/platform-value-set-generate
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/platform-value-set-generate/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-value-set-generate -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/platform-value-set-generate/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a reusable value set shared by several fields
- append values to a built-in list like Industry
- fix a deploy error when editing a standard picklist
- wire a field to a set with `<valueSetName>`
- validate value set XML before pushing to the org

## Example prompts
- Create a GlobalValueSet for priorities: Critical, High, Medium and Low, with Medium as the default
- Add a new value to the Industry standard set and show me the finished XML
- Check my value set file for deploy errors before I push it

## Overview

Generates and validates the two reusable picklist value-set metadata types — **GlobalValueSet** (a new reusable set shared across fields) and **StandardValueSet** (customizing a built-in catalog picklist like Industry or Lead Source) — and wires a CustomField to one via `<valueSetName>`.

For authoritative Metadata API type, field, and enum details beyond this skill, use the `platform-metadata-api-context-get` skill.

### Scope

- **In scope:** creating a GlobalValueSet, customizing a StandardValueSet, referencing either from a field, and the related deployment errors.
- **Out of scope:** a one-off inline picklist on a single field with no reuse → use **`platform-custom-field-generate`** (inline `<valueSetDefinition>`). Generating the *field* that references a value set is also `platform-custom-field-generate`'s job; this skill produces the value set itself.

**Two different metadata types — do not confuse them:**

| Concern | GlobalValueSet | StandardValueSet |
|---------|----------------|------------------|
| Folder | `globalValueSets/` | `standardValueSets/` |
| File suffix | `.globalValueSet-meta.xml` | `.standardValueSet-meta.xml` |
| Root element | `<GlobalValueSet>` | `<StandardValueSet>` |
| Name source | filename (dev name) | `<fullName>` = fixed catalog name |
| Value element | `<customValue>` | `<standardValue>` |
| Can add NEW values? | Yes | Yes — copy the attribute pattern of an existing value |
| Can create a new NAME? | Yes | No — only the fixed catalog |
| `*` wildcard in package.xml | Supported | Not supported |
