## What it does

The skill handles one job: the baseline access level for records a user does not own. It queries current values through the Tooling API — `InternalSharingModel` and `ExternalSharingModel` for a single object or every customizable one — then prints them as a table.

To change access, it pulls the object metadata with `sf project retrieve start --metadata CustomObject:<ObjectName>`, edits `<sharingModel>` and `<externalSharingModel>` in `.object-meta.xml`, and deploys it back. Checks run before the deploy: external access cannot be wider than internal, objects with a Master-Detail relationship must use `ControlledByParent`, and the value has to be legal for that object. Price Book is the sharp edge here — internal OWD accepts only `Use` or `No Access`, and external is always `None`, so Private or Read/Write will fail, and the skill tells you that before deploying.

There is a hard cap of two deploy attempts per change. After two failures it discards the local edits and asks how to proceed. One more thing to plan for: tightening an OWD triggers a sharing recalculation, which takes a long time on a large org. New custom objects start at `Public Read/Write`, and plenty of teams find that out the hard way. You need the Salesforce CLI at version 2.0.0 or higher and a connected org.

## Requirements
- Works with: Salesforce

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-sharing-owd-configure -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-sharing-owd-configure -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-sharing-owd-configure -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install forcedotcom/sf-skills platform-sharing-owd-configure
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-sharing-owd-configure -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills --path skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-sharing-owd-configure -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/platform-sharing-owd-configure/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check current OWD for one object or all customizable ones
- make records private without breaking external access
- edit `sharingModel` in `.object-meta.xml` and deploy it
- confirm a Master-Detail object uses `ControlledByParent`
- find out which access levels an object actually accepts

## Example prompts
- show the current org-wide defaults for Account
- set internal access on Invoice__c to Private
- change Contact external access to Public Read Only

# Managing Org-Wide Defaults

Retrieve and update Organization-Wide Default (OWD) sharing settings for standard and custom objects in a Salesforce org. OWDs define the baseline level of access users have to records they do not own.

## Scope

- **In scope**: Retrieving current OWD settings, updating internal/external access levels for standard and custom objects
- **Out of scope**: Sharing rules, role hierarchy configuration, manual sharing, permission sets, criteria-based sharing — delegate to appropriate skills

---

## Clarifying Questions

Before proceeding, confirm with the user if not already clear:

- Which object(s) do you want to get or update OWD settings for?
- What access level do you want to set? (Private, Public Read Only, Public Read/Write, Controlled by Parent)
- Do you need to change both internal and external access, or just one?

---

## Required Inputs

Gather or infer before proceeding:

- **Target org**: The org alias or username to query/update (use default org if not specified)
- **Object name(s)**: Standard object API name (e.g., `Account`, `Contact`) or custom object API name (e.g., `Invoice__c`)
- **Operation**: Get (retrieve current settings) or Update (change access levels)
- **Access levels** (for update): Internal access and/or external access values

Defaults unless specified:
