## What it does

The skill kicks in when an agent is asked to create or edit `*.policyRuleDefinition` and `*.policyRuleDefinitionSet` files. It carries the category decision tree, the full schema for the ACCESS, GOVERNANCE, RECORD and TRANSFORM variants, UI-compatibility rules for the Data Governance Policy Builder, and validation guardrails. It also keeps an eye on what the agent says back to you.

Some of the guidance is about what not to write. On ACCESS and GOVERNANCE rules, `<policyRuleResourceDomains>` is forbidden: to block an object you tag it and write the rule against the tag instead of naming the object as a domain. The skill is not meant for `UserAccessPolicy`, `AccessPolicy`, `SharingRules` or `PermissionSet` — those are separate metadata types, and reaching for this skill on them sends the agent down the wrong path.

Running it needs the `EnforceOMatic` and `PolicyRuleMDAPI` org permissions, API version 64.0 or higher, and 66.0 for conditions that use `PolicyJsonExpression`. The listed tools are `jq` 1.6.0+ and `sf` 2.0.0+. Identified-guest record access cannot be authored through MDAPI at all, because `SESSION_CONSUMER_ID` is missing from `RuleContextPathType`; that case has to be a runtime RuleProvider.

## Requirements
- Works with: Salesforce

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-policy-rule-generate -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/platform-policy-rule-generate/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/platform-policy-rule-generate/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-policy-rule-generate -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/platform-policy-rule-generate/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-policy-rule-generate -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/platform-policy-rule-generate/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install forcedotcom/sf-skills platform-policy-rule-generate
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/platform-policy-rule-generate/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-policy-rule-generate -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills --path skills/platform-policy-rule-generate
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/platform-policy-rule-generate/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-policy-rule-generate -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/platform-policy-rule-generate/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a policy rule XML for object or field access
- pick the right category for a given policy variant
- check a rule against the Data Governance Policy Builder
- author metadata for field masking
- avoid mixing up PolicyRuleDefinition with types like PermissionSet

## Example prompts
- Generate a policyRuleDefinition that forbids reading Account fields by tag
- Build a metadata package with a PolicyRuleDefinitionSet and a RECORD category rule
- Check my .policyRuleDefinition file for Policy Builder compatibility

# Authoring Policy Rule Definitions

**Gating:** requires the `EnforceOMatic` and `PolicyRuleMDAPI` org permissions.
**Min API version:** 64.0 (66.0 for conditions using `PolicyJsonExpression`).

This skill covers the **on-disk metadata XML format** for authoring policies. Use it whenever a task asks to write a `*.policyRuleDefinition` or `*.policyRuleDefinitionSet` file, or ship a metadata package containing them. The runtime side (RuleProvider, hooks) is out of scope.

---

> **Eval coverage:** This skill is exercised by the team's ADK eval framework, not by `tests/evals/` under the skill directory. Five datasets covering the ACCESS / GOVERNANCE / RECORD / TRANSFORM variants live in `packages/adk-eval/eval/domains/platform-policy-rule-generate/datasets/`.

## 1. Package Layout

A deployable package always contains:

```text
<fixture>/
  package.xml
  policyRuleDefinitionSets/<setName>.policyRuleDefinitionSet
  policyRuleDefinitions/<ruleName>.policyRuleDefinition
```

`package.xml` template (use `<version>[ftest]</version>` for ftests, `64.0` or higher for real orgs):

```xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<Package xmlns="http://soap.sforce.com/2006/04/metadata">
    <types>
        <members>Rule0</members>
        <name>PolicyRuleDefinition</name>
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 921c54d3ddf5730c

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 921c54d3ddf5730c tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
