## What it does

The skill covers one job: getting metadata out of a Salesforce org and into your local project. It runs `sf project retrieve start` in several modes — all remote changes, a source directory, a metadata type (wildcards included), a `package.xml` manifest, or a package name. Output is either source format or a metadata ZIP.

What's inside is a table of command patterns plus constraints. Every call carries `--json`, since structured output parses more reliably. Wildcard patterns like `ApexClass:My*` must be quoted, otherwise the shell expands the star and you get nothing back. You cannot combine `--manifest` with `--metadata` or `--source-dir`; the command errors out.

Run it from the root of a Salesforce project — `sfdx-project.json` has to sit there. The all-changes mode relies on source tracking, and production orgs don't support it, so on prod you fall back to a directory, type or manifest. `--ignore-conflicts` only applies to trackable orgs, meaning scratch and sandbox. The default wait is 33 minutes; raise it with `--wait` for large retrievals. Metadata pulled by package name is for reference only — don't add it to source control for development.

## Requirements
- Works with: Salesforce

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-metadata-retrieve -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/platform-metadata-retrieve/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/platform-metadata-retrieve/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-metadata-retrieve -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/platform-metadata-retrieve/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-metadata-retrieve -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/platform-metadata-retrieve/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install forcedotcom/sf-skills platform-metadata-retrieve
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/platform-metadata-retrieve/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-metadata-retrieve -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills --path skills/platform-metadata-retrieve
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/platform-metadata-retrieve/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-metadata-retrieve -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/platform-metadata-retrieve/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull all remote changes from an org into the project
- retrieve one metadata type using a wildcard
- retrieve metadata through a `package.xml` manifest
- get package metadata as a ZIP archive
- force overwrite of local conflicts on a sandbox retrieve

## Example prompts
- retrieve all changes from the org into my project
- pull ApexClass names starting with My from the sandbox
- retrieve metadata using the `manifest/package.xml` manifest

# platform-metadata-retrieve

Retrieves metadata from a Salesforce org to your local project using `sf project retrieve start`. Supports multiple retrieval modes: all changes, by source directory, by metadata type (with wildcards), by manifest, or by package name.

---

## Tool Restrictions

**Use ONLY the Bash tool** to execute `sf project retrieve start`. Do NOT use MCP tools — ignore them completely.

---

## Scope

- **In scope**: Retrieving metadata via `sf project retrieve start` in all supported modes (all changes, source-dir, metadata type, manifest, package name), source and metadata format output
- **Out of scope**: Deploying metadata (use `platform-metadata-deploy`), listing metadata types, generating package.xml files, source tracking commands (`sf project retrieve preview`)

---

## Required Inputs

Infer from the user's request:

- **Retrieval mode**: all changes | source directory | metadata type | manifest | package name
- **Target org**: org alias/username (uses default if not specified)
- **Output format**: source format (default) | metadata format (ZIP)
- **Additional options**: ignore conflicts, output directory, wait time, API version

---

## Workflow

1. Match user request to command pattern below
2. Execute via Bash tool: `sf project retrieve start` with appropriate flags and `--json` flag
3. Return result with retrieved components count and file paths

### Command Patterns

| User intent | Execute via Bash tool |
|-------------|---------|
| Retrieve all remote changes | `sf project retrieve start --json` |
