## What it does

The skill builds Salesforce Custom Metadata Type (`__mdt`) definitions in `objects/<Name>__mdt/`, their fields, and configuration records in `customMetadata/`. Unlike custom settings, CMDT records deploy across environments as project metadata. The skill enforces specific structure rules. Tag `<pluralLabel>` is mandatory, while standard custom object elements like `sharingModel` or `nameField` trigger immediate deployment errors.

Unsupported field types like `Currency`, formulas, or `MasterDetail` relationships are rejected upfront. Currency maps to `Number` fields with custom scale. The skill also writes `MetadataRelationship` explicitly instead of generic lookups, avoiding silent platform rewrites and git churn. Running the generator requires the `sf` CLI at version 2.136.8 or higher and Salesforce API 60.0 or later.

## Requirements
- Works with: Salesforce

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-custom-metadata-type-generate -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-custom-metadata-type-generate -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-custom-metadata-type-generate -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install forcedotcom/sf-skills platform-custom-metadata-type-generate
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-custom-metadata-type-generate -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills --path skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forcedotcom/sf-skills --skill platform-custom-metadata-type-generate -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/forcedotcom/sf-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/platform-custom-metadata-type-generate/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create Custom Metadata Type definitions with the `__mdt` suffix
- generate deployable configuration records as `.md-meta.xml` files
- configure `MetadataRelationship` fields targeting `EntityDefinition`
- prevent deployment errors caused by forbidden metadata XML elements

## Example prompts
- Create a Custom Metadata Type named `Partner_Tier__mdt` with public visibility.
- Add a `MetadataRelationship` field that references `EntityDefinition`.
- Generate deployable custom metadata records in `.md-meta.xml` files for my tiers.

# Salesforce Custom Metadata Type Generator and Validator

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when you need to:

- Create a Custom Metadata Type (`__mdt`)
- Generate or validate CMDT fields, including `MetadataRelationship` fields
- Generate CMDT **records** as deployable `.md-meta.xml` files
- Troubleshoot CMDT deployment errors

---

For authoritative Metadata API type, field, and enum details beyond this skill, use the `platform-metadata-api-context-get` skill.

## 1. Overview and Purpose

A Custom Metadata Type produces **two separate artifact families**, and most requests need both:

| Artifact | Path | Metadata type |
|---|---|---|
| Type definition | `objects/<Name>__mdt/<Name>__mdt.object-meta.xml` | `CustomObject` |
| Fields | `objects/<Name>__mdt/fields/<Field>__c.field-meta.xml` | `CustomField` |
| Records | `customMetadata/<Name>.<Record>.md-meta.xml` | `CustomMetadata` |

**API name suffix:** `__mdt` on the type; fields still end in `__c`.

**The defining advantage over a custom setting: CMDT records are metadata and therefore deploy between
orgs.** When a user says configuration should "ship with the package" or "be the same in every org," CMDT
is the right answer.

> **The root element is `<CustomObject>`, but almost none of a custom object's rules apply.** `sharingModel`,
> `nameField`, and `deploymentStatus` are required or normal on a regular custom object and are **hard

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the a91770d23e471af4 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
