# plantuml-skill

A coding-agent skill that writes .puml files and exports them to PNG or SVG. Useful when you need a diagram from code or from a text description.

## What it does

The skill runs the whole loop: pick a diagram type, write the source with `@startuml` and `@enduml`, send it for rendering, then check the output. Sequence, class, component, ER, activity, use case, state and C4 diagrams are all covered. Separate modes turn existing source code into a diagram, pull PlantUML blocks out of a Markdown file and render them to images, or apply a minimal edit to a diagram you already have.

Rendering goes through the public Kroki API and needs only `curl` on the machine. The catch: public Kroki uploads your `.puml` source to kroki.io, so for sensitive diagrams the skill advises a local backend instead — Kroki in Docker (`docker run -d -p 8000:8000 yuzutech/kroki`) or the local `plantuml.jar`, which needs Java and Graphviz. There is no silent fallback between backends either.

Validation is built in. Any status other than 200 means Kroki hit a syntax error, and the error text lands in the output file, so a broken `.png` can sit on disk looking fine. The skill reads that error, fixes the flagged line and retries up to three times, then degrades step by step: exotic shapes to plain rectangles, `skinparam` and `!theme` stripped, `note` lines removed, edges cut. After a successful render it uses vision to check the image for clipped labels and unreadable layout. The skill intentionally does not auto-trigger; you call it.

## Requirements
- Works with: Confluence, Notion

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill plantuml-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/plantuml-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/plantuml-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill plantuml-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/plantuml-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill plantuml-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/plantuml-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Agents365-ai/365-skills plantuml-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/plantuml-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill plantuml-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Agents365-ai/365-skills --path plugins/plantuml/skills/plantuml-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/plantuml-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Agents365-ai/365-skills --skill plantuml-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Agents365-ai/365-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/plantuml/skills/plantuml-skill/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draw a sequence diagram from a described message flow
- extract PlantUML blocks from Markdown and render them to PNG for Confluence
- sketch an ER model from an existing database schema
- edit an existing `.puml` and re-render without touching layout by hand
- check whether a finished diagram is readable

## Example prompts
- Draw a sequence diagram for OAuth login in our API
- Generate a component diagram from the code in `src/services` and export it as SVG
- Find the PlantUML blocks in `docs/architecture.md` and render them to PNG

# PlantUML Diagram Skill

## Overview

Generate `.puml` PlantUML diagram files and export to PNG/SVG using **Kroki** — a cloud rendering API that requires no local installation beyond `curl`.

**Format:** `.puml` (PlantUML text)
**Renderer:** Kroki API (`https://kroki.io`) — just `curl`, no Java needed
**Output:** PNG, SVG
**Diagram types:** sequence, component, class, ER, activity, use case, state, C4, and more

## When to Use

**Explicit triggers:**

- "plantuml diagram", "sequence diagram", "class diagram", "component diagram"
- "UML", "activity diagram", "use case diagram", "state machine"
- "visualize", "draw", "diagram", "flowchart", "architecture chart"

**Proactive triggers:**

- Explaining a system with 3+ interacting components
- Describing API flows, authentication sequences, message passing
- Showing class hierarchies, database schemas, or ER models
