## What it does

The skill walks through four steps: audit how often your teams plan now, decide which horizons need granular project detail, pick a framework, then add weekly checkpoints. Nine planning models ship inside, including Snowflake's Big Boulders, the W framework, the M framework for quarterly planning, half-yearly planning with variable resolution, and Perplexity's 75% weekly goals. The full list sits in `references/artifacts.md`.

The principles come from Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter episodes. Strategy before rituals: when it is pre-aligned, planning a major product takes days instead of weeks. Process reduces variance in standards, but it also pulls strong performers toward the average, so it is worth checking whether your rituals slow down the people who already move fast. Rolling cycles get their own treatment: plan every six months for a rolling 12, with higher confidence in the near half.

The skill asks questions before suggesting anything: what planning timeframe teams use, whether a documented strategy exists before the formal process starts, and where leaders and teams give input. Answers drive the choice of cycle for your company size and market volatility. Worth installing when planning has already stalled; without a strategy in place, some steps land on nothing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill planning-cadence -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/planning-cadence/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/planning-cadence/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill planning-cadence -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/planning-cadence/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill planning-cadence -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/planning-cadence/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills planning-cadence
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/planning-cadence/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill planning-cadence -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/planning-cadence
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/planning-cadence/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill planning-cadence -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/planning-cadence/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- align annual company priorities with team-level quarterly plans
- choose between annual, half-yearly and rolling planning cycles
- separate detailed quarterly projects from high-level next-quarter themes
- bridge quarterly goals and day-to-day work with weekly checkpoints
- cut variance in standards without slowing high performers

## Example prompts
- help me set up our planning cadence — we plan once a year and teams say it's too rigid
- audit how often we plan and suggest a framework for our company size
- how do I split detail levels between Q1 and Q2 the way Notion does?

# Planning Cadence Optimization

Align long-term strategy with short-term execution through structured, tiered planning rituals.

Help the user with planning cadence optimization using insights from 13 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Audit Cadence** - Evaluate if your current planning frequency matches your company size and market volatility.
2. **Design Resolution** - Determine which horizons require granular project detail and which should remain high-level strategic themes.
3. **Select Framework** - Choose between W, M, or rolling cycles based on your organization's need for top-down versus bottom-up input.
4. **Refine Rituals** - Implement weekly checkpoints to bridge the gap between quarterly goals and the immediate actions required to move metrics.

## Core Principles

### Strategy Before Rituals
Shreyas Doshi Live: "And the interesting I found is that because I had a real product strategy, not one of those fake ones, a real product strategy that I had gotten alignment on with everybody, my planning for this major product for Stripe took me like three days."

Efficient planning is a byproduct of having a real, pre-aligned product strategy rather than just completing bureaucratic rituals.

### Weekly Momentum Over Deadlines
Christina Wodtke: "I would say, 'What am I doing this week to get closer to our goals?' If you could answer that question, you could give up all the OKR stuff, but if you just asked the question, 'What are we doing this week to get closer to our strategic goals, our longer term goals?' That is the very heart of it..."

Shift focus from distant deadlines to the immediate actions required this week to ensure current tasks move you toward strategic objectives.
