## What it does

The skill covers building a render layer on PixiJS v8. You construct an empty `new Application()`, then call `await app.init({...})` with the options, and append `app.canvas` to the page. Textures come from `Assets.load`, and multi-asset sets go through a manifest with bundles. The v7 `Loader` class is gone.

The scene graph part is plain: everything descends from `app.stage`, grouping happens in `Container`s, and draw order follows insertion order. Animation runs inside `app.ticker.add`, with speed scaled by `ticker.deltaMS` or `deltaTime` — otherwise movement is tied to the frame rate. Pointer input needs `eventMode = 'static'` set per object. For dragging, the skill points at `globalpointermove`, because plain `pointermove` stops firing once the cursor leaves the object.

A pitfalls section walks through the usual breakage. A blank canvas usually means `await app.init()` was skipped, and `app.view` logs a deprecation warning. Big static subtrees get promoted to render groups with `isRenderGroup: true`, with a note to check pixels before and after. Examples are checked against 8.22, so v7 code (synchronous constructor, `Loader`, `beginFill`) is out of scope until you migrate. Worth checking your `package.json` first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill pixijs-rendering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pixijs-rendering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pixijs-rendering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill pixijs-rendering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pixijs-rendering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill pixijs-rendering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pixijs-rendering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills pixijs-rendering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill pixijs-rendering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --path skills/web-engines/pixijs-rendering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pixijs-rendering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill pixijs-rendering -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- bootstrap an async `Application` without a blank canvas
- load textures with `Assets` instead of the dropped `Loader`
- keep motion frame-rate independent through the ticker
- fix drag that stops updating past the sprite edge
- cache a large static background as a render group

## Example prompts
- Set up a PixiJS v8 scene: async `Application`, a background, and a sprite centred on screen
- My canvas is blank and `app.screen` throws — what is wrong with `new Application({...})`?
- Add dragging to this sprite so it keeps following the cursor past its own edges

  Build a PixiJS v8 render layer: create the async Application, load textures with
  Assets, compose the scene graph with Container and Sprite, drive the ticker loop,
  wire pointer events, and group draws with render groups. Use when building or
  debugging PixiJS v8 — when the user mentions PixiJS, Pixi, Application, app.stage,
  Container, Sprite, Assets.load, app.ticker, or eventMode. Pins the v8 async
  init() API (examples checked against 8.22).

# PixiJS 8.22 Rendering

Set up and structure a PixiJS **8.22** application: the async `Application`, asset
loading via `Assets`, the `Container`/`Sprite` scene graph, the ticker loop,
pointer events, and render groups. Pins the 8.22 API (async `init`, unified
`Assets`, `eventMode`).

## When to use

- Use when starting a PixiJS v8 project, fixing a blank canvas, structuring the
  display list, loading textures, animating via the ticker, or handling pointer
  input.
- Use when `package.json` depends on `pixi.js` (v8) and code does
  `import { Application } from 'pixi.js'`.

**When *not* to use:** Phaser's scene/loader model → `phaser-core`. 3D scenes →
`threejs-scene-setup`. PixiJS v7-and-earlier code (synchronous `new
Application({...})`, `Loader`, `beginFill`/`endFill`) needs the v8 migration first;
this skill targets v8 only. (`interactive = true` still works in v8 as an alias for
`eventMode = 'static'`, but prefer the explicit `eventMode`.)

## Core workflow

1. **Create and `await` the Application.** In v8, `new Application()` is empty;
   configuration happens in `await app.init({...})`. Append `app.canvas` (not
   `app.view`) to the DOM. Wrap top-level `await` in an async function for bundlers.
2. **Load assets with `Assets`.** `await Assets.load(url)` returns a `Texture`. For
   many assets, register a manifest/bundle and load by name. There is no v7 `Loader`.
3. **Build the scene graph.** Everything descends from `app.stage` (a `Container`).
   Group related objects in `Container`s; child transforms are relative to the
   parent. Draw order = insertion order (later = on top).
