## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of PixiJS v8 patterns: how to destroy objects cleanly, cache subtrees with `cacheAsTexture`, reuse sprites through a pool, and tune texture garbage collection. Inside are TypeScript examples and a walkthrough of common mistakes.

It starts with profiling — browser DevTools Performance and GPU profiling — then picks the right pattern: destroy, pool, batch, cache or cull. There are sections on `GCSystem` with `gcMaxUnusedTime` and `gcFrequency`, on `PrepareSystem` for uploading textures to the GPU before the first frame, and on culling via `CullerPlugin` and `cullArea`.

One thing that is easy to miss: when you recreate an `Application`, call `app.destroy({ releaseGlobalResources: true })`. Without it, pooled batches and textures from the old app leak into the new one, and the picture starts flickering. Also disable `cacheAsTexture(false)` before destroying a cached container. The skill points to related ones: `pixijs-scene-container`, `pixijs-assets`, `pixijs-custom-rendering`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pixijs/pixijs-skills --skill pixijs-performance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pixijs-performance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pixijs-performance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pixijs/pixijs-skills --skill pixijs-performance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pixijs-performance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pixijs/pixijs-skills --skill pixijs-performance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pixijs-performance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pixijs/pixijs-skills pixijs-performance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pixijs-performance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pixijs/pixijs-skills --skill pixijs-performance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pixijs/pixijs-skills --path skills/pixijs-performance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pixijs-performance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pixijs/pixijs-skills --skill pixijs-performance -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- find what causes FPS drops in a PixiJS v8 app
- stop GPU memory leaks after recreating an Application
- cut draw calls on static UI panels
- reuse sprites instead of creating and destroying them
- remove the hitch on the first frame of a heavy scene

## Example prompts
- profile my PixiJS v8 project: FPS drops on the particle scene
- why does the picture flicker after app.destroy and a new Application?
- help me set up cacheAsTexture for a static UI panel

Profile before optimizing. PixiJS handles a lot of content well out of the box; browser DevTools Performance + GPU profiling should be your first move. Once you've found the bottleneck, apply the targeted pattern below (destroy, pool, batch, cache, or cull).

## Quick Start

```ts
container.cacheAsTexture(true);
container.updateCacheTexture();
container.cacheAsTexture(false);
container.destroy({ children: true });
import { CullerPlugin, extensions } from "pixi.js";
extensions.add(CullerPlugin);
offscreenContainer.cullable = true;
offscreenContainer.cullArea = new Rectangle(0, 0, 256, 256);
// Tune GC via init options (ms). The `textureGC.*` properties are
// deprecated since 8.15.0 — use these on the Application init instead.
await app.init({ gcMaxUnusedTime: 60_000, gcFrequency: 30_000 });
```

**Related skills:** `pixijs-scene-container` (destroy options), `pixijs-scene-core-concepts` (render groups, layers, culling), `pixijs-scene-text` (BitmapText for dynamic content), `pixijs-assets` (atlasing), `pixijs-custom-rendering` (custom batchers).

## Core Patterns

### Proper destroy with cleanup

```ts
import { Sprite, Assets } from "pixi.js";
const texture = await Assets.load("character.png");
const sprite = new Sprite(texture);
// Destroy sprite only (preserve texture for reuse)
sprite.destroy();
// Destroy sprite AND its texture
sprite.destroy({ children: true, texture: true, textureSource: true });
```

When done with a loaded asset entirely:

```ts
Assets.unload("character.png");
```

This removes it from the cache and unloads the GPU resource.

Objects you build for custom rendering clean up the same way: call `geometry.destroy()` and `renderTarget.destroy()` on the ones you create. Destroying a container also destroys the batchers cached for its render group.

### Application destroy/recreate cycle

```ts
import { Application } from "pixi.js";
// Correct destroy that cleans global pools
