# pixel-art

This skill turns a text description into a pixel art SVG for READMEs, docs or slides. Handy when you need a hero image or a cute character without opening a design tool.

## What it does

Every "pixel" is a `<rect>` 7px wide and 7px tall, with no gaps in the grid. Characters usually run 8–10 pixels wide and 8–12 tall, and reusable groups are placed with `<g transform="translate(x,y)">`. The palette stays small: 3–5 colors per character for skin, eyes, hair, clothes and shoes.

The skill ships recipes rather than a blank canvas. There is a row-by-row character template, a two-character dialogue layout with speech bubbles, a single character with a label, and a group scene. Bubbles come as `<rect>` plus a `<polygon>` tail, arrows use a marker with `orient="auto"`. The workflow is four steps: read the request, write the SVG, preview it with `open <file.svg>`, then adjust from feedback. The author notes 2–4 iterations is typical.

It relies on `Write`, `Edit`, `Read` and `Bash(open *)`. That preview step assumes macOS, so on other systems the open command will not work. Arrow direction is the other common trap: `orient="auto"` follows the line, so a line drawn right to left points its head left. Keep 38–44px of vertical space between bubble rows or they will overlap.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill pixel-art -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pixel-art/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pixel-art/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill pixel-art -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pixel-art/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill pixel-art -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pixel-art/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep pixel-art
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pixel-art/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill pixel-art -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/pixel-art
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pixel-art/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill pixel-art -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/pixel-art/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- make a hero image for a project README
- draw a cute character for slides
- build a two-character chat scene with bubbles and arrows
- add an illustration to docs without a graphics editor
- fix overlapping bubbles and wrong arrow direction in an SVG

## Example prompts
- make a pixel art cat for the README, palette matching the project
- pixel art: two characters chatting, bubbles and arrows between them
- make an SVG illustration of a programmer at a laptop, compact badge size

# Pixel Art SVG Generator

Create a pixel art SVG illustration: $ARGUMENTS

## Design Principles

### Pixel Grid
- Each "pixel" is a `<rect>` with width/height of 7px
- Grid spacing: 7px (no gaps between pixels)
- Characters are typically 8-10 pixels wide, 8-12 pixels tall
- Use `<g transform="translate(x,y)">` to position and reuse character groups

### Color Palette
Keep it simple — 3-5 colors per character:
- **Skin**: `#FFDAB9` (light), `#E8967A` / `#D4956A` (blush/shadow)
- **Eyes**: `#333`
- **Hair**: `#8B5E3C` (brown), `#2C2C2C` (black), `#FFD700` (blonde), `#C0392B` (red)
- **Clothes**: use project's brand color (e.g. `#4A9EDA` for blue, `#74AA63` for green)
- **Shoes/pants**: `#444`
- **Accessories**: `#555` (glasses frames), `#FFD700` (crown)

### Character Template (7px grid)
```
Row 0 (hair top):     4 pixels centered
Row 1 (hair):         6 pixels wide
Row 2 (face top):     6 pixels — all skin
Row 3 (eyes):         6 pixels — skin, eye, skin, skin, eye, skin
Row 4 (mouth):        6 pixels — skin, skin, mouth, mouth, skin, skin
Row 5 (body top):     8 pixels — hand, 6 shirt, hand
Row 6 (body):         6 pixels — all shirt
Row 7 (legs):         2+2 pixels — with gap in middle
```

### Scene Composition

#### Chat Dialogue Layout (like our hero image)
- Two characters on left/right sides, vertically centered
- Chat bubbles between them, alternating left/right
- Bubble tails point toward the speaking character
- Arrows between bubbles show direction of communication
- Use `orient="auto"` markers for arrow heads
- Bottom: tagline or decoration

#### Single Character with Label
- Character centered
- Label text below
- Optional: speech bubble above

#### Group Scene
- Characters spaced evenly
- Optional: ground line, background elements
- Keep viewBox tight — no wasted space

### SVG Structure
```xml
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 W H" font-family="monospace">
  <defs>
    <!-- Arrow markers if needed -->
  </defs>
  <rect width="W" height="H" fill="#fafbfc" rx="12"/>  <!-- Background -->
  <!-- Characters via <g transform="translate(...)"> -->
