## What it does

The skill walks through calling Pinecone from code: creating an index, upserting vectors, querying them. Examples are in Python with the `pinecone-client` package, covering both serverless and pod-based indexes. There are sections on metadata, namespaces and hybrid search, where dense and sparse vectors are blended through the `alpha` parameter.

LangChain and LlamaIndex integrations are shown too, along with deleting vectors by id, by filter, or across a whole namespace. Metadata filters use `$eq`, `$gte`, `$in`, `$and`, `$or` — that goes well beyond plain cosine similarity.

You need a Pinecone API key and the `pinecone-client` package installed. The vector dimension you set at index creation must match your embedding model, otherwise upserts fail. If you would rather run your own infrastructure, the authors point to Chroma or Weaviate — this skill is tied to the hosted service.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill pinecone -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pinecone/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pinecone/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill pinecone -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pinecone/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill pinecone -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pinecone/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs pinecone
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pinecone/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill pinecone -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 15-rag/pinecone
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pinecone/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill pinecone -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- create a serverless index matching your embedding dimension
- batch upsert vectors with metadata attached
- filter results by category or a price range
- partition data into namespaces per user
- combine dense and sparse retrieval in one query

## Example prompts
- Create a serverless Pinecone index with dimension 1536 and cosine metric
- Upsert these vectors in batches of 100 with category and timestamp metadata
- Query top_k=5 in the production namespace filtered to category tutorial

# Pinecone - Managed Vector Database

The vector database for production AI applications.

## When to use Pinecone

**Use when:**
- Need managed, serverless vector database
- Production RAG applications
- Auto-scaling required
- Low latency critical (<100ms)
- Don't want to manage infrastructure
- Need hybrid search (dense + sparse vectors)

**Metrics**:
- Fully managed SaaS
- Auto-scales to billions of vectors
- **p95 latency <100ms**
- 99.9% uptime SLA

**Use alternatives instead**:
- **Chroma**: Self-hosted, open-source
- **FAISS**: Offline, pure similarity search
- **Weaviate**: Self-hosted with more features

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
pip install pinecone-client
```

### Basic usage

```python
from pinecone import Pinecone, ServerlessSpec
# Initialize
pc = Pinecone(api_key="your-api-key")
# Create index
pc.create_index(
    name="my-index",
    dimension=1536,  # Must match embedding dimension
    metric="cosine",  # or "euclidean", "dotproduct"
    spec=ServerlessSpec(cloud="aws", region="us-east-1")
)
# Connect to index
index = pc.Index("my-index")
# Upsert vectors
index.upsert(vectors=[
    {"id": "vec1", "values": [0.1, 0.2, ...], "metadata": {"category": "A"}},
    {"id": "vec2", "values": [0.3, 0.4, ...], "metadata": {"category": "B"}}
])
# Query
results = index.query(
    vector=[0.1, 0.2, ...],
    top_k=5,
    include_metadata=True
)
print(results["matches"])
```

## Core operations

### Create index

```python
# Serverless (recommended)
pc.create_index(
    name="my-index",
    dimension=1536,
    metric="cosine",
    spec=ServerlessSpec(
        cloud="aws",         # or "gcp", "azure"
        region="us-east-1"
    )
)
# Pod-based (for consistent performance)
from pinecone import PodSpec
pc.create_index(
    name="my-index",
    dimension=1536,
    metric="cosine",
    spec=PodSpec(
        environment="us-east1-gcp",
        pod_type="p1.x1"
    )
)
```

### Upsert vectors

```python
# Single upsert
index.upsert(vectors=[
    {
        "id": "doc1",
        "values": [0.1, 0.2, ...],  # 1536 dimensions
        "metadata": {
            "text": "Document content",
            "category": "tutorial",
