## What it does

The skill turns a conversation with the product team into a finished document. It starts by reading `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/privacy-legal/CLAUDE.md`, where your house style lives: what triggers a PIA, the structure pulled from the seed PIA, typical depth, and who signs off. Then it checks whether an assessment is needed at all — your house trigger plus the mandatory-assessment triggers for each applicable regime, cited to primary sources.

Intake comes next: questions for the product team, and it can pull from a PRD if you supply one. Output is a PIA in your format with a conditions list, named owners, and a route for sign-off. A privacy policy consistency check runs alongside.

Before writing, it scans the outputs folder for prior `use-case-triage`, `pia-generation`, and `dpa-review` work on the same activity. If a triage once rated that activity high-risk, the PIA cannot quietly land on low-risk — it has to say what changed. Jurisdiction comes from your configuration, and rules differ across GDPR, state consumer privacy laws, and sectoral regimes, so the analysis does not carry over as written if the scope shifts. One more thing worth knowing: when a research query to your connected legal tool returns thin results, the skill stops and asks how to proceed instead of filling the gap on its own.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill pia-generation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pia-generation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pia-generation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill pia-generation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pia-generation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill pia-generation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pia-generation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal pia-generation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pia-generation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill pia-generation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal --path privacy-legal/skills/pia-generation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pia-generation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill pia-generation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal/tree/HEAD/privacy-legal/skills/pia-generation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draft a PIA for a new feature in the format your team already uses
- work out whether an assessment is mandatory under GDPR or state law
- capture data categories, purpose, retention, and access in one document
- reconcile findings with an earlier triage instead of contradicting it
- hand off conditions and owners before sign-off

## Example prompts
- /privacy-legal:pia-generation "Location sharing feature"
- /privacy-legal:pia-generation PRD: [Drive link]
- do we need a PIA for this new processing activity

# /pia-generation

1. Load `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/privacy-legal/CLAUDE.md` → PIA house style (trigger, structure, depth, sign-off).
2. Run the workflow below.
3. Check: is a PIA actually needed? (House trigger + research the mandatory-assessment triggers for each applicable regime — cite primary sources, verify currency.)
4. Intake: ask the product-team questions. Can pull from PRD if provided.
5. Write PIA in house format. Include privacy policy consistency check.
6. Output with conditions list and named owners. Route for sign-off.

## Matter context

**Matter context.** Check `## Matter workspaces` in the practice-level CLAUDE.md. If `Enabled` is `✗` (the default for in-house users), skip the rest of this paragraph — skills use practice-level context and the matter machinery is invisible. If enabled and there is no active matter, ask: "Which matter is this for? Run `/privacy-legal:matter-workspace switch <slug>` or say `practice-level`." Load the active matter's `matter.md` for matter-specific context and overrides. Write outputs to the matter folder at `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/privacy-legal/matters/<matter-slug>/`. Never read another matter's files unless `Cross-matter context` is `on`.
