## What it does

The skill gathers the ops work that usually lives in scattered wiki pages: building a release, driving settings through `config/runtime.exs`, node discovery with libcluster, telemetry and structured logs, Oban background jobs, HTTP hardening. It ships snippets you can paste — `mix assets.deploy` and `mix release`, a Repo config reading `DATABASE_URL` and `pool_size`, a `Cluster.Strategy.DNSPoll` topology for `application.ex`, deps such as `opentelemetry_phoenix` and `opentelemetry_ecto`.

There is a pitfalls section worth reading first. A release built without `PHX_SERVER=true` gives you an endpoint that never starts, and per-node `secret_key_base` values invalidate sessions after deploy. Skip cluster discovery and Presence drifts between nodes, so check the topology before switching on Presence-heavy features.

The skill runs nothing on its own: it carries `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so the model will not pull it in unprompted. Secrets are meant to come from env vars or a store like KMS or Vault rather than config files, with `SECRET_KEY_BASE` generated by `mix phx.gen.secret`. Separate sections cover containers, systemd, blue/green rollouts and `/health` and `/ready` endpoints.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-ops -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/phoenix-ops/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/phoenix-ops/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-ops -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/phoenix-ops/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-ops -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/phoenix-ops/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills phoenix-ops
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/phoenix-ops/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-ops -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/elixir/ops/phoenix-ops
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/phoenix-ops/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-ops -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- build a Phoenix release and run it as a service
- move DB and endpoint settings into runtime config
- set up libcluster so PubSub and Presence work across nodes
- wire telemetry and structured logging for prod
- lock down the endpoint with HTTPS, CORS and rate limits

## Example prompts
- help me write config/runtime.exs for a production Phoenix release
- add libcluster with a DNS strategy and start Phoenix.PubSub
- review my application.ex for common BEAM deploy mistakes

# Phoenix Operations and Deployment (Elixir/BEAM)

Production-ready Phoenix apps rely on releases, runtime configuration, telemetry, clustering, and secure endpoints. The BEAM enables rolling restarts and supervision resilience when configured correctly.

## Releases and Runtime Config

```bash
MIX_ENV=prod PHX_SERVER=true mix assets.deploy
MIX_ENV=prod mix release
_build/prod/rel/my_app/bin/my_app eval "IO.puts(:os.type())"
_build/prod/rel/my_app/bin/my_app start
```

`config/runtime.exs` for env-driven settings:
```elixir
config :my_app, MyApp.Repo,
  url: System.fetch_env!("DATABASE_URL"),
  pool_size: String.to_integer(System.get_env("POOL_SIZE", "10")),
  ssl: true
config :my_app, MyAppWeb.Endpoint,
  url: [host: System.fetch_env!("PHX_HOST"), port: 443, scheme: "https"],
  http: [ip: {0,0,0,0}, port: String.to_integer(System.get_env("PORT", "4000"))],
  secret_key_base: System.fetch_env!("SECRET_KEY_BASE"),
  server: true
```

**Secrets**
- Prefer env vars or secret stores (AWS/GCP KMS, Vault); avoid embedding in configs.
- Generate `SECRET_KEY_BASE` with `mix phx.gen.secret`.

## Clustering and PubSub/Presence

Add `libcluster` for automatic node discovery:
```elixir
# mix.exs deps
{:libcluster, "~> 3.3"},
{:phoenix_pubsub, "~> 2.1"},
# application.ex
topologies = [
