## What it does

The skill hands the agent working instructions for Phoenix: OpenTelemetry trace collection, quality evaluation, versioned datasets, experiments and a playground for comparing prompts and models. It ships recipes for instrumenting OpenAI, LangChain, LlamaIndex and Anthropic, plus examples of custom evaluators built on `llm_classify`.

You start the server either from a notebook with `px.launch_app()` or from the command line with `phoenix serve`. Storage can be SQLite, or PostgreSQL for production, wired up through the `PHOENIX_SQL_DATABASE_URL` variable. Phoenix itself installs separately — the skill only covers how to drive it.

Evaluators such as `HallucinationEvaluator` and `RelevanceEvaluator` need a judge model, and the examples use `OpenAIModel` with `gpt-4o`. So running evals means an OpenAI key even when your own app runs on something else. Worth knowing before you put evals into CI.

If you want a managed service with enterprise features, look at Arize Cloud. For deep learning experiment tracking, Weights & Biases is the closer fit.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill phoenix-observability -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill phoenix -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/phoenix/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/phoenix/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill phoenix -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/phoenix/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill phoenix -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/phoenix/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs phoenix
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/phoenix/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill phoenix -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 17-observability/phoenix
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/phoenix/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill phoenix -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs/tree/HEAD/17-observability/phoenix/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find which step of an LLM chain produced a bad answer
- run hallucination and relevance evals over a dataset
- compare two prompts or two models on the same data
- collect traces from OpenAI, LangChain and LlamaIndex in one place
- self-host observability without vendor lock-in

## Example prompts
- set up Phoenix tracing for my LangChain app
- run hallucination evals on the qa-test-set dataset and log the results to Phoenix
- start a Phoenix server on PostgreSQL and show me how to send traces to it

# Phoenix - AI Observability Platform

Open-source AI observability and evaluation platform for LLM applications with tracing, evaluation, datasets, experiments, and real-time monitoring.

## When to use Phoenix

**Use Phoenix when:**
- Debugging LLM application issues with detailed traces
- Running systematic evaluations on datasets
- Monitoring production LLM systems in real-time
- Building experiment pipelines for prompt/model comparison
- Self-hosted observability without vendor lock-in

**Key features:**
- **Tracing**: OpenTelemetry-based trace collection for any LLM framework
- **Evaluation**: LLM-as-judge evaluators for quality assessment
- **Datasets**: Versioned test sets for regression testing
- **Experiments**: Compare prompts, models, and configurations
- **Playground**: Interactive prompt testing with multiple models
- **Open-source**: Self-hosted with PostgreSQL or SQLite

**Use alternatives instead:**
- **LangSmith**: Managed platform with LangChain-first integration
- **Weights & Biases**: Deep learning experiment tracking focus
- **Arize Cloud**: Managed Phoenix with enterprise features
- **MLflow**: General ML lifecycle, model registry focus

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
pip install arize-phoenix
# With specific backends
pip install arize-phoenix[embeddings]  # Embedding analysis
pip install arize-phoenix-otel         # OpenTelemetry config
pip install arize-phoenix-evals        # Evaluation framework
pip install arize-phoenix-client       # Lightweight REST client
```

### Launch Phoenix server

```python
import phoenix as px
# Launch in notebook (ThreadServer mode)
session = px.launch_app()
# View UI
session.view()  # Embedded iframe
print(session.url)  # http://localhost:6006
```

### Command-line server (production)

```bash
# Start Phoenix server
phoenix serve
# With PostgreSQL
export PHOENIX_SQL_DATABASE_URL="postgresql://user:pass@host/db"
