## What it does

The skill covers building REST/JSON APIs and WebSocket channels in Phoenix. It goes through routing with versioned `scope` blocks, thin controllers with `action_fallback`, Ecto contexts that own data logic, and plugs for bearer-token or session auth.

A separate section handles Channels, PubSub and Presence: authorizing a connection in `UserSocket.connect/3` before a topic join, broadcasting from a context with `Phoenix.PubSub.broadcast`, partitioning topics per tenant. There are test examples for `ConnCase` and `ChannelCase`, plus notes on telemetry with `OpentelemetryPhoenix`.

The skill does not fire on its own — it ships with `disable-model-invocation: true`, so the agent won't pick it up unless you ask. You need Elixir and Mix installed, since every example starts from `mix phx.new` and `mix ecto.create`. On a non-Phoenix project there is little here for you.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-api-channels -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/phoenix-api-channels/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/phoenix-api-channels/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-api-channels -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/phoenix-api-channels/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-api-channels -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/phoenix-api-channels/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills phoenix-api-channels
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/phoenix-api-channels/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-api-channels -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/elixir/frameworks/phoenix-api-channels
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/phoenix-api-channels/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill phoenix-api-channels -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- stand up a Phoenix JSON API with versioned routes
- move data logic out of controllers into Ecto contexts
- add WebSocket channels for chat or notifications
- track who is online with Presence
- write controller and channel tests

## Example prompts
- Scaffold a Phoenix project for a JSON API and split routes into versions with scope
- Add a room Channel and broadcast messages through PubSub
- Wire up Presence so the room shows who is online

# Phoenix APIs, Channels, and Presence (Elixir/BEAM)

Phoenix excels at REST/JSON APIs and WebSocket Channels with minimal boilerplate, leveraging the BEAM for fault tolerance, lightweight processes, and supervised PubSub/Presence.

**Core pillars**
- Controllers for JSON APIs with plugs, pipelines, and versioning.
- Contexts own data (Ecto schemas + queries) and expose a narrow API to controllers/channels.
- Channels + PubSub for fan-out real-time updates; Presence for tracking users/devices.
- Auth via plugs (session/cookie for browser, token/Bearer for APIs), with signed params.

---

## Project Setup

```bash
mix phx.new my_api --no-html --no-live
cd my_api
mix deps.get
mix ecto.create
mix phx.server
```

Key files:
- `lib/my_api_web/endpoint.ex` — plugs, sockets, instrumentation
- `lib/my_api_web/router.ex` — pipelines, scopes, versioning, sockets
- `lib/my_api_web/controllers/*` — REST/JSON controllers
- `lib/my_api/*` — contexts + Ecto schemas (ownership of data logic)
- `lib/my_api_web/channels/*` — Channel modules

---

## Routing and Pipelines

Separate browser vs API pipelines; version APIs with scopes.
```elixir
defmodule MyApiWeb.Router do
  use MyApiWeb, :router
  pipeline :api do
    plug :accepts, ["json"]
    plug :fetch_session
    plug :protect_from_forgery
    plug MyApiWeb.Plugs.RequireAuth
  end
  scope "/api", MyApiWeb do
    pipe_through :api
    scope "/v1", V1, as: :v1 do
      resources "/users", UserController, except: [:new, :edit]
      post "/sessions", SessionController, :create
    end
  end
  socket "/socket", MyApiWeb.UserSocket,
````
