## What it does

Point phantom-quench at a finished artifact — a test case set, an analysis report, a design doc — and it pulls out the proper nouns, figures, citations, version statements and branching conditions inside it. Each item is then traced backwards. A local file gets grepped, an external source such as an arXiv paper, DOI or URL gets fetched and opened to see whether it truly supports the sentence attached to it. No anchor found means the claim is tagged Phantom Claim. A citation that exists but proves nothing is tagged Unsupported.

A claim only counts as grounded on non-model evidence: an actual hit in a file or a literal passage from the source. Another model saying “yes, that looks right” does not qualify. The skill carries `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Grep`, `Glob`, `WebFetch` and `WebSearch`, so it both reads and edits the artifact as it works.

Before any tracing starts, the skill confirms which artifact is under audit and which sources are declared. No declared sources is an S-grade blocker right away, since there is nothing to compare against. The skill used to be called `source-grounding-audit`; the old trigger wording still routes to it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill phantom-quench -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/phantom-quench/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/phantom-quench/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill phantom-quench -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/phantom-quench/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill phantom-quench -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/phantom-quench/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install chrono-meta/forge-harness phantom-quench
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/phantom-quench/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill phantom-quench -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness --path plugins/fh-meta/skills/phantom-quench
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/phantom-quench/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill phantom-quench -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness/tree/HEAD/plugins/fh-meta/skills/phantom-quench/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch invented numbers inside generated test cases
- confirm a cited paper actually backs the sentence quoting it
- separate model memory from what was really read in a file
- spot branching conditions that appear in no source
- check stated library versions against declared sources

## Example prompts
- Run a grounding audit on `docs/report.md` against `src/api.ts` and `schema.sql`
- Do a citation support check on every link in this design doc
- Trace each claim in `test_orders.md` back to its source

  Input-tracing grounding audit for artifacts such as test cases, analysis reports,

# phantom-quench — Input Tracing Grounding Audit

> Just because an artifact looks plausible doesn't mean it's grounded in source. plausible ≠ grounded.

> **Renamed from `source-grounding-audit` (2026-06-06)** — the grounding member of the quench series
> (steel-quench · phantom-quench · goal-quench). Same skill, same ruleset; only the label changed to fit
> the family. The **v1 paper (Zenodo 10.5281/zenodo.20397566) cites the old name** — that is the <!-- stale-ref: pinned-line=20397566 -->
> historical record, not a phantom (`paper/forge_harness_v1.0.html` is left unchanged by design; readers
> map *source-grounding-audit (v1) = phantom-quench (current)*). The deprecated redirect stub directory
> was removed 2026-06-12 — old-name utterances ("source grounding audit", "grounding audit") route here
> via this description's trigger phrases.
> This is a **label rename, not a capability change** — phantom-quench does not fuse steel-quench or
> inject faults; those remain separate (orthogonality is deliberate — see Role Separation below).
>
> **Quench-series semantics** (resolves the "quench *what*?" question): each member subjects a different
> thing to the forge — steel-quench hardens an **existing output**; phantom-quench hardens the system
> against **mistaking the absent for present** (the phantom illusion — *not* the phantom as a material to
> harden); goal-quench hardens the **goal itself** into an advanced version. Same verb, consistent grammar.
