# personal-brand-network

A skill that helps you build a professional network and a public audience, moving from private learning to visible contribution. Useful when your work stays invisible.

## What it does

The skill walks you through four steps: map the relationships and knowledge areas your brand rests on, set up a routine for publishing, build long-term ties by giving value first, then audit your digital footprint and outreach against audience feedback.

Inside are question sets the skill puts to you and a list of common mistakes. Among them: scarcity thinking around powerful people, learning in private without public implementation, and acting only as a curator of other people's ideas. There are also templates — a networking playbook, a newsletter growth hierarchy, stranger lunches, DM answers as micro-blogging, a network freshening checklist, and a script for emailing someone you have never met. The full list sits in `references/artifacts.md`, and the 21 sourced insights in `references/guest-insights.md`.

The material comes from guests and posts on Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter. If you want a dated weekly plan with metrics, this is not it: the skill is a frame for a conversation with your agent, not a publishing calendar.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill personal-brand-network -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/personal-brand-network/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/personal-brand-network/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill personal-brand-network -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/personal-brand-network/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill personal-brand-network -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/personal-brand-network/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills personal-brand-network
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/personal-brand-network/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**

```
2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/personal-brand-network
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/personal-brand-network/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill personal-brand-network -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/personal-brand-network/SKILL.md
## When to use it
- name the five people who control the path to your next role
- turn a project you already run into a public initiative
- start creating something daily instead of one polished piece
- rewrite a cold email so a stranger actually reads it
- check what a recruiter sees on your current profile
## Example prompts
- help me build a professional network — where do I start and which ties matter
- review my profile and tell me which skills are invisible on it
- suggest a daily publishing routine, no big articles
# Personal Brand Network
Transform your professional expertise into a magnetic network and a high-affinity audience.
Help the user with personal brand network using insights from 21 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.
## How to Help
1. **Map the landscape** - Identify critical path relationships and unique knowledge areas to anchor your brand.
2. **Develop a content engine** - Create a sustainable routine for sharing original insights and reactive micro-blogging.
3. **Cultivate strategic connections** - Build long-term relationships through an abundance mindset and value-first interactions.
4. **Audit and optimize** - Refine your digital footprint and outreach strategy based on audience feedback and organizational goals.
## Core Principles
### Top-of-Funnel Discovery Engine
Gergely: "In the first about nine months of the newsletter, it got to 50,000 subscribers, and then the next five months, or six or seven months, it went up by another a hundred and something thousand subscribers. This was when Substack introduced recommendations, which has been a massive growth engine, and I guess being one of the top publications, I benefited from it."
Use a high-quality free version of your content as a massive top-of-funnel engine for audience discovery. This creates a step-function growth pattern by leveraging platform recommendations and lower barriers to entry.
### Mind-Follower Loyalty
Julian Shapiro: "When people follow you for your mind, when they're mind followers, not labor followers, higher affinity means more loyalty, means they pay closer attention to what you're saying. And if you actually try to get them to do something with you, you have an event offline, there's something you're selling, there's a cause you care about, they're way more likely to indulge."
Building an audience around your unique thinking creates significantly more loyalty than acting as a content curator. Sharing original insights attracts high-affinity followers who value your perspective.
