## What it does

The skill runs web queries through `scripts/mcp/perplexity_search.py` using `uv`. It provides five operational modes based on Perplexity's sonar models: quick factual answers via `--ask` (`sonar`), raw ranked links without synthesis via `--search`, multi-source summaries with `--research` (`sonar-pro`), structured logic analysis with `--reason` (`sonar-reasoning-pro`), and comprehensive reports through `--deep` (`sonar-deep-research`).

Direct web search supports time filters via `--recency` (`day`, `week`, `month`, `year`), domain constraints with `--domains`, and result limits from 1 to 20 using `--max-results` (default is 10).

Execution requires an active `PERPLEXITY_API_KEY` in your environment or in `~/.claude/.env`. The tool will fail immediately if this variable or the `uv` runner is missing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill perplexity-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/perplexity-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/perplexity-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill perplexity-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/perplexity-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill perplexity-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/perplexity-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 perplexity-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/perplexity-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill perplexity-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --path .claude/skills/perplexity-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/perplexity-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill perplexity-search -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/perplexity-search/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- retrieve ranked search results without AI synthesis filtered by recency
- analyze technical architecture trade-offs with step-by-step reasoning
- compile multi-source research reports using `sonar-deep-research`
- fetch quick answers grounded in real-time web citations

## Example prompts
- Find recent articles on OpenTelemetry agent tracing from the past month using Perplexity
- Compare FastAPI and Django for microservices using Perplexity research mode
- Reason whether to use Neo4j or SQLite for a graph under 10k nodes

# Perplexity AI Search

Web search with AI-powered answers, deep research, and chain-of-thought reasoning.

## When to Use

- Direct web search for ranked results (no AI synthesis)
- AI-synthesized research with citations
- Chain-of-thought reasoning for complex decisions
- Deep comprehensive research on topics

## Models (2025)

| Model | Purpose |
|-------|---------|
| `sonar` | Lightweight search with grounding |
| `sonar-pro` | Advanced search for complex queries |
| `sonar-reasoning-pro` | Chain of thought reasoning |
| `sonar-deep-research` | Expert-level exhaustive research |

## Usage

### Quick question (AI answer)
```bash
uv run python scripts/mcp/perplexity_search.py \
    --ask "What is the latest version of Python?"
```

### Direct web search (ranked results, no AI)
```bash
uv run python scripts/mcp/perplexity_search.py \
    --search "SQLite graph database patterns" \
    --max-results 5 \
    --recency week
```

### AI-synthesized research
```bash
uv run python scripts/mcp/perplexity_search.py \
    --research "compare FastAPI vs Django for microservices"
```

### Chain-of-thought reasoning
```bash
uv run python scripts/mcp/perplexity_search.py \
    --reason "should I use Neo4j or SQLite for small graph under 10k nodes?"
```

### Deep comprehensive research
```bash
uv run python scripts/mcp/perplexity_search.py \
    --deep "state of AI agent observability 2025"
```
