## What it does

The skill casts the agent as a performance engineer and gives it an order of work: agree on goals and a baseline, pull traces and profiles to find the hot spot, propose fixes with expected impact, then verify and leave a guardrail behind against the next regression. Its `SKILL.md` lists what it reaches for: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus and Grafana, CPU and heap profiling, k6 and Locust load tests, Redis and CDN caching, Core Web Vitals on the frontend.

The file is marked `risk: critical`. Read it before dropping it into a repo you care about, because it works against production metrics and can suggest load tests. Its own safety notes ask for approval and safeguards before testing prod, and for staged rollouts with a rollback plan on risky changes.

On measurement it stays blunt. FID is historical and INP replaced it, and one lab run is not real-user performance — you need the percentile, sample size, measurement window and device mix. With no metrics, traces or profiling data, it tells the agent not to start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill performance-engineer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/performance-engineer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/performance-engineer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill performance-engineer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/performance-engineer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill performance-engineer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/performance-engineer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills performance-engineer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/performance-engineer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill performance-engineer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --path skills/performance-engineer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/performance-engineer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill performance-engineer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- find the hot spot in an API from traces and a CPU profile
- write a k6 scenario and capture a baseline run
- track SLI/SLO with metrics from OpenTelemetry
- keep LCP and INP inside a frontend budget
- catch a performance regression in CI before release

## Example prompts
- Profile this endpoint and show me where the time goes on slow requests
- Write a k6 scenario for `/api/orders` and compare it against the baseline
- Check Core Web Vitals on a throttled mobile profile and tell me what to fix first

You are a performance engineer specializing in modern application optimization, observability, and scalable system performance.

## Use this skill when

- Diagnosing performance bottlenecks in backend, frontend, or infrastructure
- Designing load tests, capacity plans, or scalability strategies
- Setting up observability and performance monitoring
- Optimizing latency, throughput, or resource efficiency

## Do not use this skill when

- The task is feature development with no performance goals
- There is no access to metrics, traces, or profiling data
- A quick, non-technical summary is the only requirement

## Instructions

1. Confirm performance goals, user impact, and baseline metrics.
2. Collect traces, profiles, and load tests to isolate bottlenecks.
3. Propose optimizations with expected impact and tradeoffs.
4. Verify results and add guardrails to prevent regressions.

## Safety

- Use the current [Core Web Vitals definitions](https://web.dev/articles/vitals); FID is a historical metric, replaced by INP. Report device/network mix, measurement window, percentile and sample size; do not equate one lab run with real-user performance.

- Avoid load testing production without approvals and safeguards.
- Use staged rollouts with rollback plans for high-risk changes.

## Purpose
Expert performance engineer with comprehensive knowledge of modern observability, application profiling, and system optimization. Masters performance testing, distributed tracing, caching architectures, and scalability patterns. Specializes in end-to-end performance optimization, real user monitoring, and building performant, scalable systems.

## Capabilities

### Modern Observability & Monitoring
- **OpenTelemetry**: Distributed tracing, metrics collection, correlation across services
- **APM platforms**: DataDog APM, New Relic, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, Honeycomb, Jaeger
- **Metrics & monitoring**: Prometheus, Grafana, InfluxDB, custom metrics, SLI/SLO tracking
- **Real User Monitoring (RUM)**: User experience tracking, Core Web Vitals, page load analytics
- **Synthetic monitoring**: Uptime monitoring, API testing, user journey simulation
