## What it does

This skill bundles reference patterns for Lighthouse audits and Core Web Vitals fixes. It sets strict targets: LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, and INP under 200ms. Page audits run through the `npx lighthouse` command or headless automation with `@lhci/cli`.

The instructions focus on markup and asset loading. Images require explicit `width` and `height` attributes to avoid content shifts. Hero assets need `fetchpriority="high"` and early preloading. Applying `loading="lazy"` to the main hero image directly breaks LCP metrics. Animations must stay on `transform` properties instead of shifting layout box offsets.

For JavaScript execution, the skill outlines batching DOM work and breaking long tasks with `requestIdleCallback`. Running the recommended audits requires a Node.js runtime for the Lighthouse CLI.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill performance-and-web-vitals -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/performance-and-web-vitals/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/performance-and-web-vitals/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill performance-and-web-vitals -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/performance-and-web-vitals/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill performance-and-web-vitals -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/performance-and-web-vitals/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills performance-and-web-vitals
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/performance-and-web-vitals/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill performance-and-web-vitals -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/performance-and-web-vitals
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/performance-and-web-vitals/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill performance-and-web-vitals -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- fix CLS layout shifts caused by unmeasured images and late ad slots
- optimize LCP by preloading hero assets with high priority
- reduce INP latency by splitting long main-thread JavaScript tasks
- run headless Lighthouse audits in CI pipelines

## Example prompts
- Run a Lighthouse audit on our landing page and help reduce LCP
- Fix layout shift and CLS issues in the hero component
- Optimize font loading and script execution to improve INP

# Performance and Web Vitals

## Run a Lighthouse Audit

```bash
# CLI audit — outputs JSON and HTML report
npx lighthouse https://example.com --output html --output-path ./lighthouse-report.html
# Headless, useful in CI
npx lighthouse https://example.com --chrome-flags="--headless" --output json --output-path ./report.json
# Audit specific categories only
npx lighthouse https://example.com --only-categories=performance,accessibility,seo
```

Or open Chrome DevTools → Lighthouse tab → Analyse page load.

## Core Web Vitals

### LCP — Largest Contentful Paint
*How fast does the main content appear?*

**Target: ≤ 2.5s**

LCP measures when the largest visible element (hero image, heading, video poster) renders. It is the user's perception of "did the page load?"

**Common causes and fixes:**

| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Unoptimised hero image | Use WebP/AVIF, correct size, `fetchpriority="high"` |
| Image not preloaded | `<link rel="preload" as="image" href="hero.webp">` |
| Render-blocking CSS/JS | Defer non-critical JS, inline critical CSS |
| Slow server response | CDN, caching headers, edge delivery |
| Web font blocking render | `font-display: swap` or `optional` |

```html
<!-- Preload LCP image -->
<link rel="preload" as="image" href="hero.webp" fetchpriority="high">
<!-- LCP image: no lazy loading -->
