# scaffold-exercises

Builds a graded problem set on a topic: analytical, empirical and coding problems plus a separate solution key. Useful when a lecture needs a matching assignment.

## What it does

The skill takes a topic and flags, reads whatever source material you point at — a lecture in `.tex` or `.qmd`, a paper, a dataset header — and first prints a Pre-Flight Report: difficulty, counts per type, dataset, learning objectives. Problems come after that.

Three problem types. Analytical ones ask for a derivation or proof, empirical ones for estimation and interpretation on a dataset, coding ones for an implementation in R or Stata. With no dataset supplied, the skill simulates a small one at a fixed seed so the key stays reproducible. Every problem carries a short note on why it matters.

Output is two files under `quality_reports/teaching/`: `<topic-slug>_problems.md` with no answers and `<topic-slug>_solutions.md` with worked solutions. Keeping solutions out of the student file is the whole point of the split. Coding solutions are executed through `Bash` when possible; without R or Stata they get flagged DRAFTED — NOT RUN instead of passed off as verified. An empirical problem that references variables missing from the dataset stops the run — the skill will not invent columns. It does not grade submissions or run timed exams.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill scaffold-exercises -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scaffold-exercises/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scaffold-exercises/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill scaffold-exercises -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scaffold-exercises/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill scaffold-exercises -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scaffold-exercises/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow scaffold-exercises
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scaffold-exercises/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill scaffold-exercises -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --path .claude/skills/scaffold-exercises
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scaffold-exercises/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill scaffold-exercises -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/scaffold-exercises/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- produce an assignment with an answer key from a lecture
- mix derivation, estimation and code in one set
- get a reproducible dataset for empirical problems
- keep solutions in a file separate from the student set
- calibrate problem depth to intro, core or advanced

## Example prompts
- /scaffold-exercises instrumental variables --difficulty core --count 8
- /scaffold-exercises consumer theory --types analytical,coding --no-solutions
- /scaffold-exercises quantile regression --dataset data/wage.csv

description: Scaffold a graded problem set with sections, problems, worked solutions, and short "why this matters" explainers across analytical, empirical, and coding types. Use when user says "make a problem set on X", "scaffold exercises for this lecture", "create practice problems", "generate homework with a solution key", "build a graded assignment on topic Y". Emits a clean student set plus a separate solution key — NOT for grading submissions or auto-checking student answers.

# `/scaffold-exercises` — Problem Set Scaffolder

Generate a graded problem set as two files: a clean **student set** (problems only) and a **solution key** (worked solutions + a one-line explainer per problem). Pattern imported from `mattpocock/skills`, adapted for economics teaching — the primary lens is graded coursework that mixes derivation, estimation, and code.

**Input:** `$ARGUMENTS` — a topic (e.g., "instrumental variables", "consumer theory", "quantile regression") and optional flags. See [Flags](#flags).

---

## When to use

- You have a lecture or reading and want a matching assignment with an answer key.
- You want a mix of problem types (derive, estimate, code) at a controlled difficulty, with solutions emitted **separately** so the student file stays clean.

Do **not** use this to grade submissions, auto-check answers, or build a timed exam — it scaffolds *practice/graded* material, not assessment infrastructure.

---

## Problem types

| Type | What the student does | Solution artifact |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **analytical** | Derive / prove / characterize (theory: optimization, identification, comparative statics) | Step-by-step derivation with the key lemma named |
| **empirical** | Estimate + interpret on a provided or simulated dataset | Expected estimate, sign/magnitude reasoning, common-mistake note |
| **coding** | Implement an estimator or simulation in R or Stata | Runnable reference snippet + expected output shape |
