## What it does

The skill equips the assistant with Python code patterns for `pdfplumber`. It extracts characters with exact coordinates, crops specific page regions, and filters text by font. You can also inspect table detection visually with `to_image()`, which saves an image showing detected boundaries and lines.

The workflow targets native text PDFs. If your document is a raster scan, `pdfplumber` will not detect characters without an OCR pre-processing step. The skill also integrates with the `office-mcp` server using `extract_text_from_pdf` and `extract_tables_from_pdf`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill pdf-extraction -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pdf-extraction/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pdf-extraction/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill pdf-extraction -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pdf-extraction/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill pdf-extraction -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pdf-extraction/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install claude-office-skills/skills pdf-extraction
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pdf-extraction/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill pdf-extraction -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills --path pdf-extraction
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pdf-extraction/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill pdf-extraction -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- extract tables from reports directly into pandas DataFrames
- pull text from specific page ranges or cropped coordinates
- parse invoice totals and metadata fields from digital documents
- inspect table grid detection visually before exporting

## Example prompts
- Extract all tables from this financial report
- Get text from pages 5-10 of this document
- Convert this PDF table to CSV

# PDF Extraction Skill

## Overview

This skill enables precise extraction of text, tables, and metadata from PDF documents using **pdfplumber** - the go-to library for PDF data extraction. Unlike basic PDF readers, pdfplumber provides detailed character-level positioning, accurate table detection, and visual debugging.

## How to Use

1. Provide the PDF file you want to extract from
2. Specify what you need: text, tables, images, or metadata
3. I'll generate pdfplumber code and execute it

**Example prompts:**
- "Extract all tables from this financial report"
- "Get text from pages 5-10 of this document"
- "Find and extract the invoice total from this PDF"
- "Convert this PDF table to CSV/Excel"

## Domain Knowledge

### pdfplumber Fundamentals

```python
import pdfplumber
# Open PDF
with pdfplumber.open('document.pdf') as pdf:
    # Access pages
    first_page = pdf.pages[0]
    # Document metadata
    print(pdf.metadata)
    # Number of pages
    print(len(pdf.pages))
```

### PDF Structure
```
PDF Document
├── metadata (title, author, creation date)
├── pages[]
│   ├── chars (individual characters with position)
│   ├── words (grouped characters)
│   ├── lines (horizontal/vertical lines)
│   ├── rects (rectangles)
│   ├── curves (bezier curves)
│   └── images (embedded images)
└── outline (bookmarks/TOC)
```

### Text Extraction

#### Basic Text
```python
with pdfplumber.open('document.pdf') as pdf:
    # Single page
    text = pdf.pages[0].extract_text()
    # All pages
    full_text = ''
    for page in pdf.pages:
        full_text += page.extract_text() or ''
```

#### Advanced Text Options
```python
# With layout preservation
text = page.extract_text(
    x_tolerance=3,      # Horizontal tolerance for grouping
    y_tolerance=3,      # Vertical tolerance
    layout=True,        # Preserve layout
    x_density=7.25,     # Chars per unit width
    y_density=13        # Chars per unit height
)
