## What it does

The skill converts Markdown into PDF and offers themes for print layouts, training materials, and phone reading. It can process one file or run a batch conversion. For a `.docx` source, use the separate `docx-creator` workflow.

Conversion runs through `weasyprint` or Chrome. The backend depends on the content and theme, and you can override it with `--backend`. `weasyprint` requires its package; the Chrome option requires Google Chrome to be installed. Chrome may clip content beyond the page area, so inspect the rendered PDF.

Run `scripts/md_to_pdf.py` from the skill directory, or provide its full path. Relative image paths in the Markdown must resolve from the source file’s directory. Running the script from the document’s folder can fail, so the working directory matters.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill pdf-creator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/pdf-creator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/pdf-creator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill pdf-creator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/pdf-creator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill pdf-creator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/pdf-creator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills pdf-creator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/pdf-creator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill pdf-creator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path daymade-docs/pdf-creator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/pdf-creator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill pdf-creator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/daymade-docs/pdf-creator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn a Markdown document into a print-ready PDF
- prepare a PDF layout for phone reading
- convert a batch of Markdown files with one theme
- choose a theme for a document’s intended format
- inspect the PDF after conversion

## Example prompts
- Convert `guide.md` to a print-ready PDF and choose a suitable theme.
- Make a phone-reading PDF from `manual.md` using the `mobile` theme.
- Convert every Markdown file in this folder to PDF with the `warm-terra` theme.

# PDF Creator

Create professional PDF documents from markdown with Chinese font support and theme system.

For an existing `.docx` source, use `docx-creator/references/word-to-pdf.md` instead.
Choose by the authoritative input as well as the output suffix.

When adapting a manufacturer PDF manual into a concise Chinese illustrated
recipient guide, read [the illustrated-manual workflow](references/illustrated-manual.md)
before drafting. Continue through this Skill's normal theme, backend and
visual self-check requirements after assembling the Markdown source.

## Quick Start

Every `scripts/…` path below is **relative to this skill's own directory** — run the commands from there, or substitute the absolute path. Running them from the directory holding your markdown fails with `Failed to spawn: 'scripts/md_to_pdf.py'`. Omitting the output path is allowed and derives it from the input's basename (`input.md` → `input.pdf`, in the input's directory).

Keep relative image paths relative to the input Markdown file's directory.
The converter uses that directory for both backends, including when its
temporary HTML and the command's working directory are elsewhere.

```bash
# Default theme
uv run --with weasyprint scripts/md_to_pdf.py input.md output.pdf
# Source directory and filename containing spaces and Chinese
uv run --with weasyprint scripts/md_to_pdf.py \
  "guide source/操作指南.md" "guide source/操作指南.pdf"
# Use a named theme
uv run --with weasyprint scripts/md_to_pdf.py input.md --theme warm-terra
# Mobile theme
uv run --with weasyprint scripts/md_to_pdf.py input.md --theme mobile
# Batch convert all markdown files with a specific theme
uv run --with weasyprint scripts/batch_convert.py *.md --theme warm-terra --no-preview
# No weasyprint? Use Chrome backend (auto-detected if weasyprint unavailable)
python scripts/md_to_pdf.py input.md --theme warm-terra --backend chrome
# List available themes
python scripts/md_to_pdf.py --list-themes dummy.md
```

## Themes

Use `--list-themes` from Quick Start to read the available theme names and
descriptions. Read [`themes/*.css`](themes/) for page geometry, font
stacks, colors and per-theme layout rules.

To create a new theme: copy `themes/default.css`, modify, save as `themes/your-theme.css`.

## Print vs Mobile: Choose the Right Theme

| Scenario | Recommended Theme | Why |
|----------|-------------------|-----|
| Print on A4 paper, handouts, contracts | `default` | [Print layout](themes/default.css) |
| Training materials, course outlines | `warm-terra` | [Training layout](themes/warm-terra.css) |
