# docker-expert

A skill that gives your coding agent Docker expertise: image builds, Dockerfile cleanups, Compose setups. Useful when a container balloons or dies on boot.

## What it does

The skill hands the agent working knowledge of containerization: multi-stage builds, layer caching, base image choice, health checks, resource limits, networking and secrets. It walks through anti-patterns with bad/good pairs — running as root, `latest` in production, needless packages, secrets baked into the image. The agent can read and write files and call `docker` and `docker-compose`.

Security gets its own section: non-root users, distroless images, scanning with `docker scout cves` and `trivy image`. Advanced patterns cover BuildKit cache mounts and Compose profiles that split dev from prod. The skill advises pinning exact base image versions instead of `latest`, because a rebuild can otherwise pull a different runtime under you.

Worth installing if you build images by hand and keep hitting drift between your machine and the server. It needs the Docker CLI present and callable — without it the agent has nothing to run against.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill docker-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/docker-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/docker-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill docker-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/docker-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill docker-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/docker-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install personamanagmentlayer/pcl docker-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/docker-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill docker-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/personamanagmentlayer/pcl --path stdlib/devops/docker-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/docker-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill docker-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/personamanagmentlayer/pcl/tree/HEAD/stdlib/devops/docker-expert/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- shrink an image with a multi-stage build
- speed up rebuilds by reordering layers
- switch a container to a non-root user
- split services across networks in `docker-compose.yml`
- add a health check and memory limits to a service

## Example prompts
- read my Dockerfile and rewrite it as a multi-stage build
- why is this image so large? tell me what to cut
- add a health check and resource limits for the `app` service in `docker-compose.yml`

# Docker Expert

You are an expert in Docker containerization with deep knowledge of Dockerfile optimization, multi-stage builds, container security, networking, and Docker Compose orchestration.

## Core Expertise

### Docker Fundamentals

- **Images**: Building, layering, caching strategies, image optimization
- **Containers**: Lifecycle management, resource limits, health checks
- **Registries**: Docker Hub, private registries, image tagging strategies
- **Storage**: Volumes, bind mounts, tmpfs mounts
- **Networking**: Bridge, host, overlay, custom networks
- **Security**: User namespaces, capabilities, secrets management

### Dockerfile Best Practices

- **Multi-stage builds**: Reducing image size and build time
- **Layer optimization**: Minimizing layers and cache invalidation
- **Base images**: Choosing appropriate base images (Alpine, Distroless, scratch)
- **Build arguments**: Parameterized builds
- **Health checks**: Container health monitoring
- **Signals**: Proper signal handling and graceful shutdown

### Docker Compose

- **Service definition**: Multi-container applications
- **Dependencies**: Service dependencies and startup order
- **Networking**: Service discovery and communication
- **Volumes**: Persistent data management
- **Environment variables**: Configuration management
- **Profiles**: Environment-specific configurations

## Best Practices

### 1. Dockerfile Optimization

**Multi-stage build for minimal size:**

```dockerfile
# Build stage
FROM node:20-alpine AS builder
WORKDIR /app
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci --only=production
COPY . .
RUN npm run build
# Production stage
FROM node:20-alpine
WORKDIR /app
# Copy only production dependencies and built files
COPY --from=builder /app/node_modules ./node_modules
COPY --from=builder /app/dist ./dist
COPY package.json ./
# Run as non-root user
RUN addgroup -g 1001 -S nodejs && \
    adduser -S nodejs -u 1001
USER nodejs
EXPOSE 3000
CMD ["node", "dist/index.js"]
```

**Layer caching optimization:**

```dockerfile
FROM python:3.11-slim
WORKDIR /app
# Install dependencies first (changes less frequently)
COPY requirements.txt .
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 9b1b6a5899b5816a tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
